A new study shows that worse sleep quality predicts lower physical activity in people with post-traumatic stress disorder. Results show that PTSD was independently associated with worse sleep quality at baseline, and participants with current PTSD at baseline had lower physical activity one year later. Further analysis found that sleep quality completely mediated the relationship between baseline PTSD status and physical activity at the one-year follow-up, providing preliminary evidence that the association of reduced sleep quality with reduced physical activity could comprise a behavioral link to negative health outcomes such as obesity.

This study makes sense and also raises questions for me. I know that sometimes my physical symptoms are caused by nightmares. Sometimes I will have none or very little tremor or low grade heart palpitations, then wake up from a nightmare and have strong tremors and what feels like anxiety, for a few days with really strong heart palps for another 48hrs, despite the nightmare being the only 'stressful' event in that time. Then I think, 'What came first the chicken or the egg? Am I only assuming that? I have no idea really.

I have to admit... I read this and went WTFO. Duh. (Along with a private mini soapbox rant about studies proving the painfully obvious)... Until I got to this part in the synopsis:

"According to Talbot, the results suggest that behavioral interventions to increase physical activity should include an assessment for sleep disturbance."

Ah. Okay. So this could actually be put to good use / is most likely the result of people clamoring for a way to help their patients that is ignored or unfunded because there isn't a study proving "My patient has only slept 4 out of the last 72 hours... There is no way on earth he/she is going to be able to be mentally or physically capable of performing the tasks asked of them, much less be safe to drive themselves to the event. We need to treat their sleep issues in conjunction with getting them more physically active."

hahaha I was thinking the same....big DUH! Then, well, yeah. Ok, got it now. LOL.
 
I am not very active and I sleep great almost every night. I guess I can count myself lucky.
