hello, my name is Ann I was diagnosed with cptsd ( not a big fan of the word complex) in March of this year. I am currently working with a trauma specialist but am having difficulty opening up and staying present at the same time. I came across this site and hope it will help me to start to feel more comfortable talking about my abuse. I'm too afraid of groups right now so any help or advice from anyone is much appreciated. Thank you

Glad you both joined the community.

Asking for and receiving help was one of my largest hurdles as I felt I'd already gotten past much of it. Beep. Wrong answer. The gift that keeps on giving, so to speak.

Unlearning a whole lot of familial and societal stuff to make room for more meaningful (to me) means of relief and trying to be the love I never received helps tremendously.

Best wishes in carving out your healing journeys along the way (as it never ends, from what I've seen so far) that best suits your needs. So much experience, wisdom, support, and knowledge to be found here. Welcome!

Hi! And welcome :)

Im not a big fan of the word comlpex. Its just so complex! But great that you have started therapy with a traumaspecialist. Hope you'll make progress in opening up and staying present. Its really difficult! But let it take the time it needs and dont beat your self up about it. After all it takes some time to build trust for a therapist.

Me I do Emdr with my therapist so luckily I dont have to talk much wich is really difficult for me.

Good morning everyone! Thank you everyone for all your support and wonderful comments. So glad I'm not alone in this scary journey. I'm starting to find out it's okay to talk and nothing will happen to me now. This is a good feeling to me. Thx!

Good for you for seeking resources, Ann. A couple tools I find helpful to deal with not staying present with my therapist are: 1) Saying something like, "Darn, I'm wanting to deal with this stuff, but I'm finding my body shutting down. Could you guide me in some somatic exercise or something to help me come back, and then we can proceed?" and 2) Talking to my body (it sounds weird to me) and gently say, "Hey, this IS big stuff we're dealing with here and I'll give you as much time as you need 'til you feel ready to work on these things. Until then, I'm going to be right here. Take as much time as you need, even if it doesn't happen in this session."
