Ok Larry, do you want the answer I guess to the problem? You know the answer most likely, though avoid it because of the reaction it obtains from you. Exposure therapy is what you need first and foremost IMHO with your matter. The reason I say that is due to the nature of your traumatic event, you must learn through practice that a person behind you is not going to hurt you. I believe you need a therapist to begin immediate exposure therapy upon you, where you begin by moving your seat to the centre of the room so your back is not exposed, you then progressively introduce your therapist walking around you in, then standing behind you, even having them in front of you with your back to the door and someone coming through that door. Exposure therapy in a safe environment is what you need first and foremost so you can just get back into certain aspects of your life immediately.

This will retrain your brain so you know sitting in the middle of a room is safe, people behind you are not there to hurt you, they are just behind you doing their own thing as well.... just like your doing your thing.

This one fear is crippling you by the sounds of things, so you must eliminate this fear by facing it and retraining your brain immediately. Once achieved, then you put it in practice for some months in shops and public areas then go back and work on the other psychological aspects.
 
Anthony, Thanks for the reply. I'll try that exposure therapy; I;m locating a therapist now. I want to try EMDR again, because it was real helpful before but I became overwhelmed and quit. What is IMHO? - Larry
