I know there are other memory issue threads, but I wanted to start this one as it pertains to specific circumstances.
Let me start out by saying that I have the memory of an elephant. Don't test my memory cuz you'll always lose. I have a way of locking away the most mundane details that everyone else forgets. My mom is amazed at the things I remember from my childhood, such as good memories of my brother and sister. My dad often remarks that I never forget a thing. I think I get it from my mother. Once in college I went to the science museum and played a table top version of the light up Simon electronic memory game. I think I got up to a sequence of 50+ before messing up. My friend just looked at me in shock.
Suffice to say, my memory is excellent. Usually...
Nobody notices that my memory is crap in public situations in which I am overstimulated. We went to a baseball game last week and don't remember much other than the final score. I get so overstimulated in such situations (yes, a major league ballpark where there's always something going on... The game, the scoreboard antics, the cutesy things they do on the field, the crazy mascot... I could go on...) Suffice to say, it's impossible for me to concentrate on ONE thing and as a result I remember almost nothing. The same thing happened when I went to a TSO concert a few years ago... I have little memory of it.
The way I see it is this... It is impossible for me to feel safe in such places. I have to pay attention to anything and everything, and in the process, my memory goes. In effect, I'm not holding on to anything in my mind because I'm forced to live every second in the here and now, all my energy focused on the present moment so no energy gets spent on retaining these moments.
Any thoughts?
Hugs,
SOL
