I disagree with Trump that mental illness is what should be our focus. We of course need better mental health services for a wide variety of reasons, but it misses what’s causing on a societal and individual level these horrible events.

Evil is evil. Mass shootings are the only crime I see people blame mental illness so much. If someone mugs me, people don’t say oh they must be mentally ill to mug or rape you. People more easily call evil for what it is. There is no national call for better mental health care for rapists and muggers as the solution to rape and muggings. Why?

Experts say there is little link between mental illness and mass shootings.
If you talk to any practicing psychiatrist, they will tell you that the risk factors for gun violence are being a young, angry, socially isolated man

Muggings vs murder/mass murder is like comparing apples to oranges. It’s entirely two different things. One is bad, the other is horrendous.

I still think that anyone that is angry and crosses the line to kill someone, isn’t in their right mind and there is an underlying mental health issue.

I have an idea for security at our schools. What about putting our Veterans in schools as security guards? There are thousands of Vets needing a purpose again. Protection of our children is something they can do. Many would probably even volunteer their time.

If I'm not mistaken after Sandy Hook alot of them planted themselves at their children's schools front doors. Just a thought.

If you haven't figured that out yet that will never happen. The mayor of my city told us especially the elderly to go get a gun for protection.

The home invasion and car jacking problem out of control here. Because of felons with illegal guns.

^^^^^. This is exactly what I’ve been saying. We’re becoming the wild Wild West where everyone has a gun. Soon there will be people standing in the streets having a showdown and shooting people like it used to be. Yes, we have shootings now, But arming everyone is just plain stupid, and asking for trouble.

We should be following the example of other countries that have banned guns and how they are doing. We’ve become a nation of f*cking violence and were accepting it as NORMAL!!!! IT ISNT NORMAL, it crazy, it’s inhumane, it’s dangerous and it’s insane.....

Get rid of the freaking guns!

Won't do a damn thing. The black market is going no where and criminals will find a way. So, you just stopped someone's ability to defend themselves. Nothing else can defend against a bullet but another bullet. So, criminals will have the guns and citizens will have no legal way to defend themselves and will die due to it.

Probably there is an underlying mental health issue. But, there being an issue and there being a diagnosis with a paper trail are such disconnected things.

I'm not sure that America (at large) will ever change the way it thinks about guns. I really wish it would, but it's hard to see how that's going to happen. I think the teenagers who are going full bore against hypocrisy in govt officials are really amazing, and I agree that there's a lot of hope in that.

Ultimately, it's going to be up to the people, more than the government, to create a foundation for any kind of lasting change on the issue. So if that group of teenagers is representative of how the future generation is going to approach thinking about gun violence and gun ownership, it looks to me like there is some real potential for change.

In the short term...if large-scale reform isn't possible, I think more immediate reform could be achieved simply by making the process a hell of a lot more paperwork-y, state-by-state. If you had to fulfill all the requirements you need to meet in order to get a driving license in the us: a training period, a probationary period, a test, and regular renewals, plus obtaining a specific form of liability insurance - casual ownership would probably go down. People who are serious about owning guns would still acquire them, but the general public wouldn't be able to impulse-buy a gun. I know this sounds super-simplistic, and it's not the entirety of a solution, but it would cut down on casual ownership, and it would change the way we think about ownership.

I also think any casual gun owner who justifies their firearm by saying they need it to be able to fight back against a gunman (home invasion, robbery, etc) should look into ballistic clothing instead.

Nothing else can defend against a bullet but another bullet. So, criminals will have the guns and citizens will have no legal way to defend themselves and will die due to it.
Ballistic armor. It's just as realistic a way to protect yourself, if you do not know how to actually shoot your gun. It can keep you alive. Getting out there and shooting the shooter? W/o really having any training in how to do that? Foolish to think it's that easy.

@joeylittle, I wish I could love your post a million times.

I am going to some of these kids' pages every freaking day to defend them against the crazy hate-filled people against them. Just to send a supportive message or appropriate music video. Anything to defeat the hate mongerers.

Oh, and by the way, did anyone else know David Bowie ("Changes") was controlled by the "luciferian illuminati," hahaha. One of the many fun things I have learned by posting on these kids' pages.
