News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

I think iTs really interesting this thread has fallen off.
Eh, it's pretty normal after people get heated up in a thread; like a cooling-off period.

Also, we are in something of a waiting period now. Differs by location, obviously - but generally, we're at the bit where everyone does their best to adhere to the guidelines, and hopefully, not fan the flames of panic for others or themselves.

I found this project, called 91-DIVOC, pretty interesting. Put together by a computer science professor. It's not useful for updates - but if you're interested in understanding how the virus behaves/how the numbers shift over time, it's a nice tool.

Word to the wise - don't look at it unless you're willing to spend a good 20 minutes, and make sure to check out both the logarithmic and linear scales (you can toggle back and forth between them on the bottom of each graph).

We went walking it was very warm though the breeze out of the north was stiff 25 - 30 mph. It was 3/4 high tide, so it seems crowded. Crossing the street to my house was very busy, like summer. So much for essential only, but that's territorial. I'm home, you go home. My town my beach. People with babies and kids and dogs . My wife went to a hospital for papers and She said the emergency room was deserted and they did not seem to be preparing for an emergency. It's a big hospital in a very busy suburban area. We are both at somewhat high risk in terms of age and underlying conditions and my wife works with the elderly and has been working right along. We see a mask almost never I think I've only seen the pharmacist in one .

Where I am at, one can have confirmed exposure to multiple positive cases, be in respiratory crisis in a hospital... and still can’t get tested. They keep warning the public to not push for a test. And in the end, it doesn’t change treatment or recommendations.

Anyone sick should stay home the recommended time frame to make sure they don’t give whatever they have to someone else. Strep, the flu, etc... all are cause to stay home. The last thing docs and patients need is someone showing up with the flu that they can’t do anything about anyhow. That person with the flu will now be at risk to be exposed to covid 19 in a health care setting, compete for the same limited resources, and now expose cocos patients to the flu. Someone can get double infected with covid and all the normal viruses that run around. Don’t stress too much about not getting tested. Just stay home if sick and hopefully it will pass. Of course this is moderated by the advice by all the experts to call a provider as needed and of course get emergency help if in a serious crisis.
And then there's worry for myself. I've been exhausted the last two days. Way more than normal. Often a sign I am getting sick. I have asthma. My landlord (who I was exposed to) is healthy and he's super sick. I have the same sort of worries @Justmehere posted. If I got so sick I needed to be hospitalized (and there was space) what would happen to my animals. Several of them our special needs.
@Muttly - I hope you rest up and don’t get sick! If so, I hope you are able to stay home and recover there. Not being able to care for my own dog is something I didn’t think about in disaster planning. Of all the people I know that are positive or presumed positive with covid 19, most got better in 2-7 days. I know one person with asthma that got it, tested positive, got better in two days!

The situation in Europe -

On one hand there is this:
Coronavirus live updates: Italy’s death toll climbs over 9,000
On the other, this:
Covid-19: Sweden is doing the opposite of almost all of Europe
(Keeping almost everything open despite the outbreak.)

It's just plain awful to read about the large number of people dying or in severe condition. It's too damn many, because hospitals are overwhelmed. And it's hard if you actually know people, even if just virtually, who are currently struggling with the more severe form.

But, as I had just shared on my own social media, while we should feel compassion and absolutely keep those in mind, OF COURSE and obviously, and should all do all possible measures to isolate and protect our high-risk family and friends, be it because they're elderly or immuncompromised or have other underlying conditions, it is still good to keep in mind that there is helluva lot observation bias going on in what's being reported. That is NOT meant to diminish the very real and very awful situation in hospitals all around the world. We should still try to not let ourselves get paralyzed with fear. Because, what is not being overly reported is that there is a LARGE number of people that recover. Currently almost 131,000 people have officially recovered.

Maybe this is helpful to some of y'all, us, currently struggling with fear. While we all should do all we can to decrease further spread, while we absolutely should not diminish the severity of this all, we should also keep in mind that people do recover. That people do have mild forms. Most of the people, actually. We should be mindful and compassionate of the severe cases, but we should try not to panic.

FYI for US people. Even if you’re on a ViSA as long as you pay taxes you eligible for the stimulus package check. So make sure you follow up especially if you lose your job or job is on the line.

This is incorrect. Non-resident aliens are explicitly exempt. (Non-resident aliens are also exempt from unemployment benefits.)

I read the bill.

Unfortunately... most minimum wage jobs don’t pay enough to pay taxes on. Similarly, to the millions who are underemployed, scrabbling together bit & piece work, seasonal work, self employed and still in the early/red years or after having a bad year.

So the most vulnerable people, living paycheck to paycheck, pooling their money with others for the most basic things? Our tens of millions of working poor? Are completely passed over. As well as those who are unemployed, but don’t qualify for unemployment benefits.

One can only HOPE that this is just the first step... paying taxpayers first, so that help for the people who need it most isn’t completely shouted down. But I very much doubt it.
