I think it’s possible the US could go to war with one of its numerous enemies as a distraction from civil war. I think we are a long ways off from that but on a steady march in that direction.

Do you think it would unite people this time? in the past it has but now..... I think there's a massive divide between people and the half that opposes the government would more likely oppose another war than support it?

I mean, I don't really know. And what would civil war look like? Who commands the army? So where would the rebel army come from? People that own guns? Most of the big gun owners support current govt. dont they?

I don't think there will be a civil war in the states. Just like my province isn't going to split from the rest of Canada. It's just not feasible at this time and it's still a minority belief.

I read- maybe it was on here- that more people thought a civil war would happen during obamas leadership than now.

Maybe covid will lead to the thing that leads to the thing that starts a civil war (or other war)

I'd be more worried about a civil war when theres a democrat in office- cuz again, which citizens have most of the guns?

November will be interesting for the states- especially if theres a second wave at the same time.

Once again, find myself completely happy to not live in the states. Might have to think about immigrating to Australia though, just to get further away from the mess that is below..... ?:laugh:

Sorry? Is there a civil war going on or about to happen in the US atm? I know there's tension but is it really that bad??

I don't understand how a few protesters here and there, waving around placards & demanding action can amount to the level of unrest that needs to happen for civil war. I thought they simply wanted to go back to work etc? Don't the Govenors of each State get to decide that?

I know the politicking can get bizarre but also cannot see either of your main political oponents encouraging a taking up of arms in a coordinated military sense to wipe out their fellow citizens. That'd be something to see? Isn't covid19 doing enough?

Are you sure the enemies of the US would be silly enough to provoke the US atm? And like who? Because they'd be thinking what we all think - anger, frustration & the need to have a 'cause' are on a hair-trigger. Don't poke the bear?

@Innordinate - you're right. Atm we are basking in a rare period of political thoughtfulness, civility & bipartisan group hugs :oops: are happening all over the place. lol.

There is virtually no bickering - just a little bit here and there & that's getting stamped on quickly. The States who are not necessarily the same party as the Feds have all worked together to help with covid19. And btw I'm loving it!

The politicians who have sought a platform to whinge, whine or create tensions are not getting the air-time. Nobody can be bothered with their squeaking.

But unfortunately, you can be sure - the backstabbing, political coup attempts & unnecessary juvenile bickering that is such a prominent feature of the political landscape here will return with a vengeance. :rolleyes: It'll be sad when that happens.

The shutting down of an entire economy has it's down-side for sure. There are rumblings and some of the States and Territories are starting to lift a few restrictions here and there.

Atm we've got the NZ PM entering into the Australian national meeting on Covid19 today - something about how NZ and Aus are relatively clean in comparison to most of the rest of the world - virus wise? :cautious: and the idea of opening up borders btwn the two countries is gaining ground.

Time for a holiday to NZ?

Have you ever wondered if the person doing the overly animated sign language during press briefings is really not just waving their arms and making funny looking faces? Every one I see looks like they are just bitching out someone. I have seen deaf people sign and have never seen them that animated. Have fun with it.

^Necessary because it imparts emotion as well as message. Put some noise cancelling headphones on & then see if you think the body language used is 'overly animated'. If you do it for long enough - it will seem normal.

The point was not to make light of deaf people. It was to get people to lighten up and smile. Civil war conversations and all that. We are not even close to one unless you watch CNN which has loads of fake news. Even Saturday Night Live has had skits on the translators. Some of them are funny to watch because of the over animation.

Personally, I, a hard of hearing person, find this beyond offensive.

Care to make fun of people with mobility disabilities and their funny looking wheelchairs next? Or perhaps tell a few jokes about people without limbs? Those blind people, always bumping into things, am I right?

This is a long thread and to make it the easier to follow, we need to keep it on the topic of the pandemic. Debating if sign language interpreters are funny or not has nothing to do with the pandemic. Please cool it about all the side topics on this thread. Got it?

War with who? China?

Well, the fact that several states have sued China, the President making it very clear that China started this and now the entire world has to pay for that, inciting people's anger towards China and numberous other things, yeah, we could have a war with China.

I think the economy will change. Many (most?) things are made in China. I think that will change and we will have many more stuff made in the US. Which is good. More jobs for Americans. But how will China feel about this? The President thinks that tariffs are the answer to not having a war but how long will China feel this is fair and how much will they pay before they say "screw that". And when they say "screw that", how will the US respond? How will China respond? Or respond to how the US responds?

There are many things here that can lead to an all out war. Almost like one of those things that if you put one more piece of straw on, it will tip the scale, type of thing.

And I don't watch any news media. I read my news, research things for myself, and come to my own conclusions and I can see this coming with China.

Now a civil war is one that is harder for me to see. Though, Im not in any of the States that are banding together. So maybe that's why its harder for me to see? But I can certianly see how we can go to war with China very easily.

(If anybody in for an actual what's up, in sign languages more animated just stresses importance / relevance of context of what is going on. Aka the caps worthy news & serious you *wanna* sign out big and well visible so everybody gets the memo.

Big sign is providing direct citations.
Ordinary sign is fill in to context.

I need to seriously brush up on ASL though, as been a while, and I was never at professionally translating level with it, just casual and pro in my line of work. Aka my information may be both outdated and inaccurate here. ;) )

I think China has a lot more ways to respond to the US than all out war. Or again, small political wars across the globe.

And I know the news feeds in the states are overly patriotic and most Americans don't want to hear it but- I don't think the states is as powerful a country as it used to be, or that most Americans think it is.

Is China in a ton of shit over corona? probably.
Are there other ways to approach the problem than all out war? Definitely.
Chinas already been back peddling and making amends in their typical fashion- like adding extra funds to the WHO. Sending PPE etc to countries that need it more.

China vs the states is like two siblings constantly fighting, but China is the sneaky manipulative older brother and the US is the toddler throwing tantrums that "its just not fair" but the states is definitely more globally dependent than China from what ive researched.
And I think a new leader in the states come November will help ease global tensions.

I've been thinking for a long time now, there is a paradigm shift coming. Old ways are dying off, middle class is disappearing all across western civilized countries. The gap between rich and poor is growing. A change is coming. Democracy is shifting.

Maybe corona has helped push it closer just a little bit but again...... the question is going to be as a civilization- do we stay stuck in our old ways until war forces a change. Or do we elect new leaders that will slowly take us in the new improved direction.
A lot of European countries have already moved forward.
Canada is slowly, painfully making steps forward. It like two steps forward, one step back.
The US is pretty much trying to go backwards.

And still- when I look up good technologies and search out positive political movements it far outweighs the bad. So i just don't think straight up war will be a thing in the near future. I think China's too mature for that. They'll just continue to quietly buy American farmland and invest in other global markets and wait for the US to eat itself- or not.

I do think a lot of countries will be looking at how to be less globally dependent after Corona- I think most already are. So that if something like this happens again we're better prepared. But I think globally, most of the world has come together in a pretty solid "help your neighbours" kind of way. Too bad that stuff doesn't go as viral as the bad. It never has. You have to actively search for it a lot harder.

Again, what I really hope for is some massive growth in understanding of mental health, now that a lot of people with no disorders have felt what it's like to be frozen by anxiety.
And some massive personal growth on spending habit and differentiating between needs and wants.
Massive pollution cuts etc.

Doubt that will happen on a big scale but if even just a few people walk away from this with better priorities and actual compassion for others who have disorders- well, it's a step in the right direction?

Cuz yeh, I'm right there with whoever it was (sorry cant remember) who said they'd like to just give the same advice they've been given...... Just Get Over It!

Except, many Americans would rather fight then think. Hense @Freida's vets are already preparing for war. Not sure about the government, that's just the people, but we've been a "bomb them to hell" country before.

I'm just speculating, of course. Not saying this will happen. Just saying how I can see it happen. With America going after China. Not China going after America.
