On the shopping list of potential legislation

How many of those are present in Canada?

A small matter; compare the homicide rate of each united state border state with the Canadian provinces it borders.

In every case, the Canadian province has the higher homicide rate.

A simple comparison isn't sufficient to establish a causal relationship, but it is certainly enough to suggest that we take a much closer look. Could guns be part of the explanation for the lower homicide rate south of 49° north?

Internationally, there used to be a statistically significant correlation between rate of firearms ownership and homicide rate (i havent looked at it for a few years, I don't know if it's still there).

Correlation does not necessarily imply causation, however close the correlation, check out how closely correlated these ones are 15 Insane Things That Correlate With Each Other

Ignoring for a moment, whether international homicide statistics are comparing like with like (they dont).

How robust is the correlation?

Removing two points, the united state which has a mid size population high rates of gun ownership and highish homicide rate, and the Republic of Ireland, tiny population (4m) low rates of gun ownership and low rates of homicide. And the correlation ceases to be statistically significant. It is indistinguishable from a random scatter.

I think comparing the US to to any other country is kind of pointless. It's a different culture.

Comparing it to Canada or Ireland, doesn't make it better or worse, but different. There are alot of similarities sure, but that doesn't mean it is comparable to a different nation with a different history and reason for existing.

That's kind of like saying that Canada and India are the same thing because they both belonged to the British Empire less than a century ago.

. I said IF one killing could be stopped.
Why not ban ropes? What if one self inflicted hanging could be stopped. Why not ban knives? What if stabbing could be prevented.

Oh let’s ban Tide Pods. Because what if one sickness from eating laundry detergent could be prevented...

At some point, I believe personal responsibility has to matter more than it currently does in the US.

There's a dangerous logic which emerges,

Something must be done

This is something

Therefore it must be done
That right there is what I'm worried about.

People never want to believe that people who do bad things are actually very much like anyone else. People want to believe pedophiles are creepy old men in dirty trench coats. They want to believe in "stranger danger". The want to believe that the clean cut hitchhiker with the cast on his arm isn't Ted Bundy. Reality is more like serial killers look like clean cut college students.

So, in an attempt to solve "this problem" the standard response is to find some definable group and label them as the cause to be regulated. Gun owners? a possibility. People with mental health issues? another possibility.

What's a mental health issue? Technically, I believe most of us here qualify. I'm a little worried about that because I'm wondering how far "they" might decide to go to compromise my freedom. Do we want to start locking people up because we don't like what they say? There are some people out there who have very much not liked things I've said. I've got a brother who'd happily lock me up, if he had a way and the possibility crossed his mind. Anyone else?

I'm not saying we should do nothing, but I very much agree with what @Anarchy said.

Why not roll it back, I mean he has rolled back everything else, so why not this too???? Too bad if you don’t have any rights if you’re disabled. Too bad if you don’t get proper nutrition, just eat food from those lovely harvest boxes. Too bad if you can’t afford medication that keeps you alive. Or a roof over your head because he’s getting rid of section 8. Too bad!!!! Too bad if people die from guns because he won’t address our gun laws. Too bad if you don’t have insurance either.

It’s just too f*cking bad... I suggest you get over it, because according to a lot of people there ain’t shit we can do about it for the next few yrs. Oh and then they say it may take a decade to undo what he’s done. So, too bad!!!! Sarcasm emoji where are you????

Have you read HR 620 @She Cat? Businesses get 90 days to maybe fix an access issue by a disabled persons and then another 120 days. No wheelchair ramp? Oops, too bad. Been denied access with a service dog? Too bad. Business will be able to do that now. 90 days and then another 120 to fix an issue? Are you f*cking kidding me? HR 620 guts the ADA. And it passed through the House! f*cking really? It NEEDS to be stopped at the Senate. I cannot believe it passed through the House. I cannot believe the bill was even made up. Discrimination? Suck it up buttercup and get over it. :banghead:

@lostforgottensoul What part of any of this done you understand???? If you really look at everything that’s been done since Trump took office it will all become very clear.

There is no leadership anywhere in the Oval Office. It’s all about making the rich richer. Let’s talk about these so called food boxes. Hahahahahhhaha. Ok, so which cronie is going to be the one packaging these? All that lovely canned food. Spam, green beans and oh, the government peanut butter and cheese... can’t ask for any better than that to sustain you!!!!!!!

Let’s move onto medication.... Who f*cking needs it??? Really, I mean when you think about medication and health insurance, why do we want it??? We will be stuck on this f*cking earth, eating canned crappy food, on the street cause many of us won’t be able to get housing, so why would you want to stay alive???? That is if we manage to stay out of the way of the flying bullets.

It’s all about the almighty $$ and the rich getting all of it....
