Not a good day! I got punched in the face by a student today and ended up in hospital with concussion.

I am terribly anxious. I am highly reactive.

Instead of avoiding yesterday I needed to have rang the Union woman and told her I was struggling with getting it together.

I have a medical letter saying I couldn't write my statements because of the concussion so I will be okay. It doesn't matter. I will just put the statements and the medical certificates in, and done is done.

I have spent too much time being anxious about this. It's not worth it.

I have done it. I don't know how it will go but I am pretty sure they are in big shit for not sending a teacher and First Aid after I rang the school office and told them I had been punched in the face by a student. Also having a communication device around the neck of a student who is a known puncher is not really setting anyone up for success. I did suggest in my email that a Relief Teacher could be given a communication device which is not around her neck.

I was going to read it all again but I thought f*ck it, just send it.

I was so distressed about it all, which is not unreasonable given that I suffered a concussion. Also they will be in trouble for not following me up with a phonecall or email. They didn't follow the required processes or procedures.

Everyone's idea of writing it up and sending off forms was spot on, and if I ever have such an incident again I will report in a timely fashion, but I was concussed and not able to do it this time. I really did do the best that I could do. That was it. It just didn't happen. I tried writing an email the first day after - then wrote three drafts after that, and then I wrote three drafts of dot points. I just couldn't focus. I could have got it in possible on Wednesday but after I went to the doctors I was wiped out. I just had to sleep. I was a mess on Thursday after walking up all night having panic attacks, so I did the best that I could do. And this will have to be f*cking good enough, because it is what it is, and I wasn't not properly cared for or supported whilst I was there. So they failed me badly and set up me by having violent students in with students who are non verbal with no mobility.

Unfortunately my PTSD was triggered, but the anxiety that comes from a concussion was a significant issue as well.

It sounds like your anger is well placed, you know what you need to do, you got it together, and you are aware of the post-consussive symptoms. Looks like you have had a difficult time, but you are spot on with your feelings and responses. Please make sure to see a specialist in head trauma.....not just a general practitioner.

I am sorry you are struggling.

I like to offer what i learned from brain injury and concussions. Everything you are describing is like ptsd revved up with a heavy fog.

Not to overload you...here are some tips for acute stage post injury:
Reduce sugars and caffiene to allow nervous system a chance to take a step down. and reduce inflammation.

Increase fermented foods for neuroprotection.

Supplements:
MCT oil or coconut oil for ketones that can help fuel the repair process thay takes alot of energy...hence why we feel tired and sleepy. 40ml twice a day.

GABA to reduce over firing neurons..excitotoxicity which can lead to cell death.

BCAA (or foods containing) branch chain amino acids speeds up repairs. I think it is 0.7g/kg for 15 days. The amount is apprx 3 times more than recommended for normal use.

OMEGA 3 (or lots of fish/nuts) to help recovery as brain is made of fat. 3000mg of DHA... i know its a lot compared to 500mg for general health maintenance values.

SLEEP and Fasting.
Sleep without disruption (i know its hard but try sleep....listen to body) allows the clean up crew to remove toxins and hunt for free radicals to help heal brain. There are special cells called astrocytes that only activate during sleep.

Fasting, intermitten fasting and or safe cardio exercise (chk with doc is u clear for activity) promotes BDNF that helps grow new cells.

I wish you the best for speedy recovery.

@Spotted Pardalote @shatter eyes All great suggestions! If you have a seizure disorder, check with neurologist prior to taking GABA as it can increase seizure activity in some people who have a lowered seizure threshold. I couldn't take it after my TBI but I'm diagnosed with a seizure disorder.

Yes I am trying not to do too much, and I have done pretty well with that.

Thanks for all your insights and information.

I think I am going to be fine. I didn't black out or hit my head. I just felt pretty yucky after it happened. The option is there for a post concussion group or a specialist but I think I will be okay now. I just need to build up activity gradually.

Thanks it has been tough @shatter eyes I have struggled.

I forgot about the sugar thing - that does make sense, unfortunately I tend to seek comfort in sugary things.

You folks know so much! I don't know if I will manage to do all of this eating, but I will be mindful.

I have rested a lot and slept a lot. I really needed to rest.

I am at the point now of just getting up a bit more and moving around.

I understand taking comfort in sugary foods. I learned the shared suggestions about a year after..and still dont always have the motivation to be consistent.
They are most effective in the early stages. I used to eat alot of bakery and chocolates. I eventually tapered off. Now i tdy to be mindful and choose dark chocolate over milk..less sugars.

@Wilbur thanks i should tell doc about GABA bcuz i got seizure disorder too after tbi.

Increase activity gradually is good as with rest. You are doing all the right things! I hope you feel better soon.

@shatter eyes Years ago, TBI specialist told me not to take it. While you might be able to tolerate it- other medications w GABA can lower threshold. Epileptologist wont let me take either.

Sorry @Spotted Pardalote I have only just stumbled upon this thread. Have you taken a step back and read the title? It says you got a 'concession' for being punched in the head!

I am sorry, but initially I was looking for the humour in the situation before realising it must be a typo, and you are probably really not in the mood to correct it, or even want it pointed out.

I do hope you are now feeling better. Although never assaulted in the workplace, I have certainly been threatened. The worst was a 3 year old brandishing a kitchen knife, and it suddenly became clear to me the child was in charge of the family. Mother did as she was told. Anyway, I never suffered any physical injury, and can only sympathise that you did.
