Normally, it would something about the size of an emoticon, or bigger / smaller, however; if a tree type scenario, where it starts out bar, no real roots, broken branches, etc, and it slowly heals, comes together and grows, establishes roots, then it could feasibly be done as a background single image overlay to the user block information. In other words, it sits under your premium badge, username, usertitle, etc, as a faint image.

A globe and hands is already starting to sound way tooo complicated, the moment you start mentioning political correctness for hand colour.

The concept has to be based on the aim of the community, which is to come here and heal. Find the appropriate word that relates to healing, then assign an image to it. An image can be manipulated in many different ways... the first part is basically agreeing on a word that represents the forums aim, then assign that image. If you get that, the rest is easy.

Growth = Tree OR ???
Healing = Glowing Hands OR ???
Work = A tool of some kind OR ???
Et cetera...

Connection - an increasing row of stick figure type people holding hands? When another one is added, they would be linked to the existing ones. Either genderless, or alternating male and female figures. Edited to add - just thought, maybe people who don't like touch wouldn't like this, though.

Integration (external, with the community, and internal, becoming whole again) - I like the rainbow idea, a colour being added at a time. It's also a strong lesbian/gay symbol, though (at least in the UK it is) so I don't know if that would be many people's first association with it, and might confuse the message?

Growth - the tree concept is really nice, but visually I think it seems a bit too complicated. I think a row of leaves could symbolise it and also be a clear visual.

I like the ideas about an image gradually "healing" or "improving" in some way, like a healthy tree emerging or something dark becoming lighter and brighter. The only thing with those is, the risk of them in their early stages looking like a negative image for new members and others who haven't posted a lot - they would have the broken, lacking or dark stages, maybe for some time.

Ok, I think I've got it. Stick figures: [DLMURL]http://www.istockphoto.com/search/portfolio/697682/?facets=%7B%2235%22:%22stick%20figure%22%7D#1b530cf8[/DLMURL]

They can be coloured, adapted and pretty much can represent a whole lot of different things, such as stages of recovering / managing PTSD.

To give you a rough understanding of what you can do with those, is that each rank set would comprise 4 figurines. They could all be the same, each one changing colour, or they could all be different, telling a figurative story. The images appear based on posts, then when you hit the fourth image, upon reaching the next goal, the next set appear, starting at one, appearing until all four are shown, and so forth.

There are no limits to the amount of sets that can be listed. It really is unlimited, and more what can be done with a set / how many stories can be told.

The beauty is that it doesn't need be perfect from the start, as more sets can be added into the overall story at any given stage, before or after another set.

Not sure about this idea but what about a pyramid with different colours at each stage like Maslow's hiearchy of needs. At the base of the pyramid on Maslows are basic needs to the top of the pyramid which my understanding is where we reach our full potential but we must go through and transcend each stage to reach our full potential and the higher you go up in the pyramid the greater your potential for living a fullfilled life. Each new user would only have a base of the pyramid and as you transcend the stages your pyramid would be increased by a level until you reach your 'full' potential for a more enriched life after PTSD.

Not sure what labels you could use but I like the growth idea of a pyramid.

I like all the other ideas as well as far as the the example of Growth=tree as well :)

I like the one climbing and waving the flag!

I stopped a third of the way down the page... as I think there is craploads we can get from them. The bigger issue is the order to deliver them!

Have to say that I love the stick figures, as there is a lot of flexibility, and different stages can be represented. Just curious as to how a member's rank/stage would be determined? Order is another tough one, as there seems to be a lot of commonality in the beginning, but in the middle there can be a lot of growth simultaneously in several areas.
