Like I said, I don't do forums and this is my first time. ASL uses body languages and facial expressions to convey the grammar parts of the language. English has its own limitations in expressing things like these. ASL is a rich language that stands on its own. So it's not a "hand waving and weaving" invented method (meaning a group of people sitting around the table coming up with ways to talk overnight). It's a language that uses body parts to express ourselves. ASL has been around for more than 100 years (yes, part of the time it's been hidden in the closets out of the fear of being backlashed / blacklisted). Cave people who's vocal cords hasn't been developed used "signs" to communicate. Once the vocal cords have been fine tuned, "signs" have been dropped. Imagine that! It's been around for a long time.

*nod* ASL is beautiful. I live near one of the largest ASL schools in the US so I have to try to be "tactful" and not eavesdrop on conversations around me. I only understand about half of what is said. My social awkwardness prevents me from interrupting to tell people I can sign and I want to join the conversation. I don't understand enough so it feels like an insult to the fluent signers. I don't want to be rude.

No, it's not. Just go up and introduce yourself. You be surprised. If you don't understand, they will make the time to clarify. How are you going to advance yourself to become fluent? We all start with "baby" words and to be fluent in a language takes an average of 5 years. Took me two weeks to learn more than 250 British Sign Language words (BSL and ASL is not the same. Sign language is not universal).. Took me a week worth to learn LSQ (French Canadian Sign Language). They all know I'm not fluent but they welcome the learning process. I'm gifted in learning other languages so I pick up faster than most people. I always wanted to learn another country's sign language (Italian, Irish, and Yugoslavia variations).

I've just joined this forum. Went I saw your post about being Deaf, I wanted to say "Hi", or more accurately, sign "Hi" :tup:

I am deaf and now becoming Deaf (I know you understand the difference). After speaking English for many years, sign language is now my preferred language, but I'm not fluent yet.

I've sent you a 'Conversation' (which I assume is private as I've read posts here mentioning Private Conversations). My guess is that you'll get a notification appearing on the envelope symbol on the top left of the page. Also if you click on my profile there's a 'Start A Conversation' option. Not sure how it works as the video guide posted here isn't subtitled & I can't hear the narrative *rolls eyes* smiling...

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad that the smilies help you communicate. I think the way you used them was great!!!! I just want to tell you that sometimes I choose a smilie based on what it looks like rather than it's name. I'm an artist so I hope that I will never offend you.........it might happen not on purpose at all. OK?
