Okay so I know almost NOTHING about PTSD except how it relates to soldiers and what I found in the DSM. The symptoms listed either don't apply to me or are so vague I have a hard time what the hell they are talking about. The only reason I know I have PTSD is because I got diagnosed. I'm not recognizing symptoms let alone manage them and I can barely concentrate I'm feeling so stressed. Even writing this now is hard I feel like ripping my own hair out its so bad. I need something quick and dirty on PTSD symptoms and how they relate to the real world thatt's easy to understand. At least then maybe I'd know what to look for. PLEASE HELP!

Um...you're having some pretty severe anxiety right now, is my guess?
Things I do when freaking out:
  • Grab an ice cube
  • Drink a glass of water
  • Have a beverage
  • Take a nap
  • Yoga stretches
  • Hug myself
  • Chant OM
  • Chew up a Benadryl
  • Snap a rubber band on my wrist, hard.
I am a fan of dialectical behavioral therapy. A good book to read is " I can't get over it! " by Aphrodite Matsakis.

Trauma and Recovery by Judith Herman is good, but its rather dense with jargon. I have the PTSD Sourcebook by Glenn (?) Schiraldi, which I've found helpful.

Search the internet though; you're bound to find recommendations for good books. Just keep in mind, some are written for sufferers and others are written for those that treat them.

I've read I Can't Get Over It too but remember nothing about it except that the title isn't really encouraging. That may not be a the author's fault; sometimes the publishing company decides what the title should be. In any case, they blew it with that one IMO.

Look for reviews after searching 'trauma' and 'ptsd' books on amazon and take your time to see the reviews, each book is meant for a certain group. Yes they only accept as trauma if it was physical and they were in war but the truth is emotional trauma can be even more devastating sometimes.

I lived in childhood terror, bullying, abuse and multiple daily traumas. I have cptsd and the book pete walker cptsd from surviving to thriving is saving my life. I'll focus my reading from now on on childhood trauma, narcissistic parents and cptsd. Read about trauma online and you'll also find suggestion on books on the specific types of trauma. If you research well you'll get useful ones. I found this amazing and compassionate author in my first search, I narrowed down the ones better suited and chose his first, I don't regret and am only begining to learn I am a trauma survivor and I didn't even develope from childhood to adulthood.
