Metabolic Psychiatry wow!!!!

I recently learned about metabolic psychiatry and the good results of remission of mental health disorders on the ketogenic diet.

I started the diet 6 days ago. On the 4th day I started to feel better like the blinds were opening and today 6th day, i feel like my brain has woken up. The transition from using damaged glucose paths to fuel the brain has been replaced by fuelling by ketones and I have found it after 6 days, to be unbelievably effective. My mood has greatly improved, my anxiety is much better, my sleep is better too. I didn't imagine the keto diet would change things this rapidly but clearly the glucose system/path in my brain is f*cked. Fuelling the brain by using ketones has given dramatically different results in days. I actually thought today, " Is this how people are actually supposed to feel Wide awake and focussed and calm???". I cant remember the last time I felt this great!

Wish I had known sooner that because my brain glucose system is clearly a mess, my brain would never function properly unless it used ketones for energy instead. I eat within a 6 hour window 12-6pm and fast for 18 hours ( a lot easier than it sounds once you start eating keto).

I haven't read the research section on here but The Metabolic Mind by Dr Georgie Ede is on YouTube if people aren't already aware of it. Its been used to put bipolar and schizophrenia into remission too. Apparently all MH disorders are damage to how the metabolic system works in the brain. Its working for me so far anyway!

Unbelievable and its only the first week.

So glad I tried this. Youtube Georgia Ede, Metabolic MInd. Shes also on Diary of a CEO for a long interview.

Its not currently used as a first option treatment but if I still feel the same in 3 months time, Im going to titrate down on my mirtazipine after speaking to the GP

Good to hear. Diet is everything to manage PTSD, along with exercise. Those two things alone significantly help manage anxiety and depression. I wish more people did what you are, being a diet that suits them, and add exercise. For those unsure about this diet, a quick outline:

A ketogenic (keto) diet is a very low-carb, high-fat, and moderate-protein eating plan designed to induce ketosis, a metabolic state where the body burns fat for fuel instead of glucose. By restricting carbs to 20–50g daily, the liver produces ketones from fat for energy, often resulting in rapid weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and reduced insulin levels.

Key Aspects of the Ketogenic Diet
  • Macronutrient Breakdown: Typically, 70-80% of calories come from fat, 10-20% from protein, and 5-10% from carbohydrates.
  • How it Works: By severely limiting glucose from carbohydrates, the body is forced to burn stored fat, which is converted into ketones in the liver to supply energy to the body and brain.
  • What to Eat: High-fat, low-carb foods including fatty fish, meat, eggs, cheese, butter, oils (olive, coconut), nuts, seeds, and low-carb vegetables like leafy greens and broccoli.
  • What to Avoid: Sugary foods, grains, pasta, bread, starchy vegetables (potatoes), legumes, and most fruits.
  • Benefits & Uses: Beyond weight loss, it is used to manage type 2 diabetes and as a medical treatment for epilepsy.
  • Side Effects: The initial phase, sometimes called the "keto flu," can cause fatigue, headache, dizziness, and irritability as the body adapts.
It is important to ensure adequate intake of vitamins and nutrients, as strict restriction of fruits and grains can lead to deficiencies.

Hi @FMCA
I do this diet too for the mental health reasons
I was off it for ages but have started again a fortnight ago and can feel the improvement too
I think we'll be hearing a lot more about metabolic psychiatry in the future

Hi @Ecdysis
Thankyou, it has already made a big difference in 7 days. I also find it easy than i thought to fast for so long. Im really excited to see how things improve over the 3 months.

id cut out sugar and bread and potatoes a year ago so i wasnt expecting such a significant change. Im back to the butchers and the fish mongers in the local market tomorrow to stock up!

I think when people are suffering with mental health its more likely for people to be motivated for them to try too, bit hopefully like you say, we will be hearing a lot more of metabolic therapy going forward

I was actually told by my physician that I’m at risk for becoming pre-diabetic so I’ll keep this in mind for myself.

This is where I need to go next.
