I agree with a lot of the other posters here. For me PTSD has made the line between 'standing up for myself' and pounding someone into the dirt too narrow. Its much safer for me, and everyone else around me, for me to feign politeness and leave. I have very narrowly avoided going to jail when my...
For me its not so much the year that feels foreign but my country. I can understand how PTSD could make the present seem foreign. PTSD can anchor us in the past, make us feel that the trauma had just happened, and we are surprised by how much time has really passed.
I am grateful that:
my new olympic barbell arrived today
that the local deer feels safe enough to leave her fawn in my little meadow
the peace and quiet that a light rain brings to a spring day
I was able to tell two lost Australian tourists how to get up the mountain
I was able to walk for 90...
Think about how hard that has been for you. Then think about how hard it is for someone who hasn't had a similar experience to understand what that is like. That is where the friends from your past are.
PTSD is harder. I've survived the trauma. I'm not sure I've survived the PTSD.
@jenn1122 think long and hard before you commit to a fight that doesnt need to be yours and may not end well. If your 'ex' gets help and comes back in a year or two you can have a chance to try again. Ultimately the...
@jenn1122 Like @anthony I am a combat vet with PTSD. I suggest you read his post again. And maybe a third time. He has answered your questions even though you might not like those answers.
Being abandoned by the one person I was absolutely sure would would stand by me was the hardest part.
I don't blame her now. I didn't ask for the PTSD. Pretty sure she didn't either. I think she would have prefered a more romantic ending. If I had lost a leg or something like that she could...
I just watched Chris Alexander on the news talk about the attack in Kabul. He was the Canadian ambassador while I there as a soldier and later as an aid worker. I remember him well. He said he regretted that Canada had withdrawn all its soldiers from the country. Its one of my biggest regrets as...
I don't know if anyone else has already mentioned it but I also make 'glop' for my dog. There are lots of fancy recipes online but I keep it simple. I throw all my over ripe fruit, veggie end cuts, forgotten lettuce heads etc into a bag in the freezer next to the bones. When I have a full bag I...
@lostforgottensoul Check out this article for bone broth for people: Dead Link Removed . He isn't my favorite health writer but it gives a good starting point. All those Jewish and Scottish grandmothers that claimed bone broth was good for everything may have been right :)
I find the best prices around here are for frozen blocks of chicken necks and backs and the blocks of ground fish. Both cost less than 'premium' kibble.
A good supplement to add to meals from time to time is old fashioned gelatin. Not the plant based kind but the ones made from hooves and lips...
I raised two Australian Shepherds on a raw diet. They both lived to 17 y.o.a. They ate goat heads in Afghanistan, fish in Sri Lanka, and pig knuckles in Poland. My current dog also eats raw.
Here is what I have learned about transitioning from kibble to raw:
Feed your dog in a non-competitive...
I suggest you go see an appropriate professional. No one here can diagnose you and what you are going through is clearly causing you great distress. Getting a proper diagnosis is the first step in moving forward.
No the study didn't say PTS, I did. Vicarious trauma is a well known phenomenon in the humanitarian aid world. The study just shows insight into a possible mechanism.
In the humanitarian aid worker world we called this vicarious trauma. You don't have to see the trauma. Just listening to the same stories over and over causes some people to exhibit signs of PTS.
OK I see a lot of emotive language in the posts here. I understand why people it stirs up emotions but I'm a hardcore realist when it come to acts of terrorism. Part of the problem we have in dealing with terrorism is that most people don't understand what terrorism really is.
I prefer an old...
I'm afraid we are a long way anything like that for PTSD. Sometimes you just have to embrace the chaos and grab the bits that work for you as they fly by.
Opiate addiction is a huge problem in the area I live. It is killing people at an alarming and rapidly increasing rate.
I'm sure you already understand that your husband can't deal with the PTSD until he deals with the addiction. The opioids only mask the symptoms.
I always translate that to...
That is one of the most common myths about mental illness. Who would put up with flashbacks, anxiety, depression, dissociation, and all misdirected anger out of sheer laziness? No one. Thats who.
Welcome @Ifeelruined
You are not helpless. If you are willing to put in the effort you can beat the worst of PTSD. I'm afraid you are unlikely to get the old you back. Traumatic events change us. But it may be possible to become a new, better you.
I would have expected her to stop as well. It was definitely a violation of trust. I wish I could say it was rare but many doctors begin to see patients as a collection of signs and symptoms and forget that there is a person behind the illness.
You make sense. I think many here have felt or still feel like you do. I still do some days.
I find that when those sorts of thoughts start to overwhelm me I do better if I can focus on something outside of me. Lifting weights, walking in the woods with my dog, playing a video game.
Hey @Efus Pitch I can't give much in the way of advice. I'm not too far off from being in the same situation you are.
I just wanted to say you are not alone. Welcome, I wish it was under better circumstances.
Chronic pain is such a difficult topic these days. Where I live we are having an opioid overdose epidemic. Many people want a crackdown on opioid prescriptions but some doctors worry that their legitimate chronic pain patients will be left in the cold. Chronic pain is no joke but neither is the...
