Hey all, tomorrow will be my DB's first group therapy. He has asked me to go along as support. Can any one give me an idea of what to expect? I'm also wondering what kind of reaction he may have. Thanks for any input.
Err, unless you are also someone who benefits from the specific care he needs it probably isn't appropriate for you to go. As hard as it is, he will need to do his therapy on his own.
Group therapy limits who can go because people share very personal stories and you aren't allowed to just dropping to be supportive of someone. You have to be a client. In group therapy you can trust that everyone there has similar issues.
Learning how to listen and take turns talking about emotional stuff is hard. Some slick people (like me) have a hard time taking turns. Practice helps. :)
I hope things go well. Everything is confidential.
Thanks for the reply. I figured that I probably can't go in with him and was planning on taking a book for me to read in the waiting room. I'm just kinda wondering how he will react. I understand no two people react the same but I was just wondering about other peoples experiences with therapy.
Honestly, it's hard to say. Everyone reacts differently. Some people feel anxious or distraught right away after, some people are fine until a day or two after. Sorry, I wish I had a better answer for you.
Hello all. Just an update. The first session seemed to go pretty well. He was a bit more irritable after though. Its actally a 6 week PTSD class showing ways to cope and how to learn to relate. The 6th class is actually for family so I will attend that one with him. Hopefully he is on the right path.
