Childhood Are You Ok With Your Name?

My legal name is Michaela, but my mom's side always referred to me as Mimi or Mia. I think the...

If you do, change your name as young as possible because as you get older your name ends up on sooooooooo many legal documents, bank accts, car registrations, etc.... and the hassle becomes HUGE.

I work with a guy who is currently going through the process of legally changing his name. His whole name- first, middle, and last name. I don't know his reasons, I know he has mental health struggles- anxiety, ADHD and Tourettes that I know of, but I don't think the name change is working out quite as he hoped. I think he thought it would solve his problems, instead of which he's stuck with the nightmare of making it official, dealing with his family's reaction to it, and having to put up with the attitude of everyone else around him. At work that varies from gentle leg-pulling to outright exasperation- mostly because he's behaving as if it's the end of everything. I don't know the details but I get the impression it was an attempt to run from his problems, instead of which it's only made them more pressing.

I certainly think it's a decision that needs to be made after a lot of consideration.

I don't like mine at all. Funny story behind it...my parents did not come up with a name for me. They asked my older sister (who was six at the time) to name me. At that time, my sister like to listen to records of this lady who was a ventriloquist. So, yes, you guessed it, I was named after the ventriloquist dummy. Why, mom and dad, why?? lol

Oh yes. The name my family used for me is long dead and buried due to the old associations it once had for me.

My name is hyphenated (Mary-Louise) thankfully so as an adult I've been able to chop and change it to suit without a need for any legalities.

As a result I've been able to separate my life into neat little categories that fit different periods of my life lol

My very old and dear friends use the name Lou.
My newer friends refer to me as mary-Lou.
And my work colleagues call me Mary.

On the rare occasion that any of these people cross paths its quite the source of confusion haha

Just wondering if there are any survivors that cant stand to hear their name..
I changed mine which...
Brenton isn't my real name, its my pen name. But, I am Brenton, and writing is my coping skill. When I became a novelist my entire world shifted. I recommend writing to anyone who feels pent up or unable to say the things they want to say. Write a story or even a short book, dont use real names, and have the characters say those things you can't. I know I would have killed myself if I didn't put that pain into my work.

OMG! I thought I was the only one! This just came up in therapy because I just freaked out when t used my name. He said I could change it or he would call me something else but that felt weird. He said he thinks it's because when I hear my name it makes everything feel more real.

I hated my name because it hurt to be called by my legal name so although I have not changed my name legally, I go by the name my husband came up for me and everyone I know started calling me by my new name. I do not want to change my name legally, too much paperwork and this works fine for me.

When I went with my birth name it hurt to hear it. I have not had any problems with it yet.

My husbands gift to me, beautiful name.Autumn

Now that my husband died I love being called by the name he came up with.

I used to hate my name, but it had nothing to do with traumas. It was just that everyone, even English teachers, would mispronounce it. The sentence I have said more times than anything else I've ever said is "it's not Helen, it's Helene." Hel-EEn. Now I appreciate my name. Like someone else said, it was one of the nice things my parents did for me, to give me a pretty and traditional name, as well as a meaningful name. It was my favorite grandma's middle name and a more distant (Italian) ancestor's first name. It's a really nice name, but it seems that some people around here in southwestern Minnesota think I made it up or something. Especially since my initials are H.H. but it's my real name! It's what's on my birth certificate! They're all mostly Norwegian Americans around here (no offense, Tyra) and don't know that it's a quite common French and German first name for girls, and obviously for some Italians, since that's who I was named after.. In fact, I came across my name in a textbook for a class for the first time in college when I took German. Never had that experience before, lol.
