Being Diagnosed With Ptsd Has Been More Painful Than Having It For Me

Most people are attuned scout86 and ayrsha to what constitutes support, sorry your responses are not supportive to me.[DOUBLEPOST=1403062572,1403062388][/DOUBLEPOST]And ayesha I do not consider your reality, reality.

Supportive feedback means affirming some portion of what someone says and not criticising the individual for her opinion saying " you are overgeneralizing". Using I statements and avoiding you statements since neithrr of you know a thing about me and not Assuming but asking questions is supportive fyi.[DOUBLEPOST=1403063127,1403062972][/DOUBLEPOST]I thankfully no longer require a therapist or psychiatrist as I have healed myself to that extent. As I said before I will not be reading unsupportive responses and read the above post to learn what supportive means. Thanx.

When I share my pain the compassionate action is to witness and affirm. There is nothing to be gained by disagreeing or arguing a point because you are not going to CHANGE a person's experiences for this reason I find the responses unsupportive. I hope that helps.peace

I changed after my diagnosis, but more because I actually had an illness that I had not previously had. In other words: PTSD is real, and I'm a different person with it than I was without.

But that doesn't always mean that it's the treatment system bringing us down; sometimes it's the illness.

I'm very sorry you had the experiences you did - sometimes I honestly think people talk about challenges or weakness when talking to someone sick because they want them to know it is OK to feel weak, it is OK to be struggling.

I'm not defending the people you dealt with, I'm only offering a point of view.

I think it is really amazing that you came through college with PTSD and not only graduated, but with high honors. That is something to be very proud of. And yes, the mental health system in America is underfunded, overpopulated, and not every social worker or therapist or doctor is talented in their work. I can validate all of this that you have stated.

It is hard to read someone's statement that all mentally ill people in America are abused by the system. Many are. Many are not. My brother has not survived the mental health system in America. I have.

I think your assertions against all mental health practitioners have touched a nerve. But you have every right to be proud of your resilience.

Isn't that exactly what @xena21 did in post #2? Ask some questions to try to get a better understanding?

It's absolute nonsense that people should only respond to support and comfort you. This is a discussion forum. By all means listen to what is helpful, and disregard the rest, but don't slap people down because they say something you don't like /agree with.

I had CPTSD for many years without knowing it. Yes I did ok I'm my school and subsequent career, but had to work really hard to get there. It was a struggle but I was determined. I passed everything with good marks.

Fast forward many years and I got a diagnosis. To me it was like a breath of fresh air to find out why I was different, why I had to work harder than other people and why parts of my life were so difficult.

Having this label meant I could have therapy. It meant that I could tackle my difficulties head on and make positive changes. At last I could do something about it. And my trauma was validated instead of being denied ( by me ).

Getting the diagnosis has been a turning point in my life. Of course therapy has not been plain sailing and there have been many frustrations along the way. There are times that I have been really sick and times when it is not so bad. But I see it all as progress.

A for the state of mental health services- well I know it could be better here in the UK also . I am just incredibly lucky to have a great therapist and psychiatrist.

I can't help but think that this forum may not be the right type of environment for you. Most of us will be honest in our support rather than coddle someone. I can't help but think that you've generalized a specific experience. One bad mental health experience meaning that all USA mental health is just bad. (This is an issue that could be tackled with CBT).

@Solara , not sure if you noticed, but the thread starter has been banned from the forum. I'm only pointing it out, in case you hadn't seen. I do however understand if you saw that, but felt the need to respond anyway :)
