I keep hearing people talk about EMDR... I don't really understand it, what is it and how does it help?

Thanks very much :-)

Hello Learning123,

In my EMDR sessions a few years ago, used hand held pulsing devices, and headphones. The beats in the headphones and the pulses in the hand held devices were synchronized. My therapist and I used a protocol before and after each session, establishing a "safe place". In EMDR I was allowed to "surf around" through two distinct instances of trauma. One from age 4, the other from about age 8 or 9. The sessions helped me find memories and emotions, processing grief related to the events.

EMDR is used and mentioned with a cautionary note. It can "un-cork" a lot of stuff all at once. It is recommended - I believe - for single instance type trauma. Still, to a degree, EMDR helped me. Am a CPTSD sufferer. I still have to work on healing my trauma. And I still have to manage (or attempt to cure) my massive life-long anxiety disorder; PTSD.

If you do a web (google) search for EMDR a lot of stuff comes up. If you go into You Tube, and do a search such as: emdr sessions, there are video's. Hope this helps give you a picture of EMDR. Good luck and best wishes on your path to a better life.

I'df have to agree with James B in that it can open up things that may be difficult to deal with.

Frankly, I don't know the best way. All I know is that several times my wife has been told in the hospital that it USED be be the accepted approach that all traumas have to be opened up, examined and dealt with, no matter what, but that it is no longer considered to be the ONLY way. That sometimes people can't handle that and that sometimes, people can learn to cope with things as is, without trying to open up new wounds. New as in supressed memories, etc.

My wife's therapist, however, obviously feels that the trauma needs addressed, sometimes when I doubt she can predict the reactions. My wife had EMDR and I hope she doesn't have it again.

Thank you all so much for your responses. That gives me a helpful insight, I'll go and read up and find out more.

Thanks again

Hi L

Here is a link to an article on the forum about EMDR [DLMURL]http://www.ptsdforum.org/content/325-Eye-Movement-Desensitization-and-Reprocessing-%28EMDR%29-Basic-Principles-Protocols-and-Procedures[/DLMURL]

I just wanted to add that because I have a somewhat negative opinion, that, in no way means that someone should make a decision about having any procedure or therapy based on any one person's statements. I feel that includes the opinion of the person doing the procedure or therapy. Some opinions may carry more weight but all sides should be examined first.

You are doing the right thing in looking for opinions and explainations.

Thanks Nicolette ...guess I should have looked there in the first place! :-)

I'll take it all on board, just in case it crops up in the future, it's good to have some informed feedback so thanks guys

You can also go into the search function in the top right of the screen, select advanced search, then type in EMDR and then select titles only and you will find quite a few threads about EMDR.
