Well, it is now December. Thanksgiving has passed. What better way to use my 500th post but to start the Christmas season for me here!

I will start with an acknowlegement of just how hard this time of year is for many. I can only hope that those suffering, in any form, can maybe find a little peace and joy through the music of the season.

This is a call to share the songs that are meaningful to you! I, frankly, tire of some of the same songs played over and over on the radio. I will be sharing a few that I have found an that I love. Sometimes buried in an album that has some other song we are familiar with. Maybe some other artist that I did not even know put out a Christmas album.

So, throw some out! I want to hear something new! Or listen again to one that you find special.

ME First

Do a google search for Amy Grant, "I Need a Silent Night"

Here is the chorus:

I need a silent night
A holy night
To hear an angel voice
through the chaos and the noise
I need a midnight clear
A little peace right here
To end this crazy day
With a Silent Night

For me, the one part that I hear especially loud is needing "A little peace right here" It is a beautiful song, both musically and lyrically, I feel.

I totally understand how some here have issues with religion and things about faith. I totally get that. So this is a "heads up" that this song does have some faith component. Not all of it but some of it.

Thanks, ISH!
And congrats on your 500 posts! You're now a senior in more than one way...

Christmas is a very hard time for some, me included and I'm not quite sure how I'm going to get through it yet. Cross the bridge when it comes, I suppose. I will look up that song though. It sounds good. And now I'll start looking for other things like that.
It sounds silly but I never thought of trying to find some Christmas music or something that I haven't heard before therefore it isn't triggering. Good idea!

LOL, I SEE that I am senior now. Under my user name and in the mirror.

Manic, I really appreciate your comments. That this time of year can be triggering, that you are willing to maybe look at some part of this that may NOT trigger. I hope so. I do not want to have anyone triggered or upset at any of this. I really do understand where you are coming from in your comments, I feel.

Thanks,
ISH

Beautiful Star of Bethlehem

"Oh beautiful star of Bethlehem, (Star of Bethlehem)
Shine upon us until the glory dawns,
Give us a light to guide the way,
Unto the land of perfect day,
Oh, Beautiful Star of Bethlehem,
Shine On (Shine On) "

I've always loved that song, my mom used to sing it when i was a kid and I can never find who sang the version she used to sing...can't find the song on a cd anywhere.

I also like the song from the Polar Express where the kids are singing on the back of the train...

Hi ISH

Great post! I haven't listened to Christmas music for a few years now, so I decided to pull out some CDs and play them in my car.

My all time favorite is O Holy Night, but this particular CD (by David Phelps) has a song that some may not have heard before, so I'm gonna include the lyrics with this post. I'm not particularly religious, but this song really touched my heart today.

Mary, Did You Know?
Mary did you know that your baby boy
Will one day walk on water
Mary did you know that your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new
This child that you've delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary did you know that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man
Mary did you know that your baby boy
Will calm a storm with his hand
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod
When you kiss your little baby
You've kissed the face of God

Chorus:
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the lamb

Mary did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation
Mary did you know that your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven's perfect lamb
This sleeping child you're holding
Is the great I Am

I think "Fairy Tale Of New York" by The Pogues is a brilliant song for Christmas.

A bit different from the normal songs for Christmas but still good.

The Holiday season is such a busy, hectic period that we do really have to stop and think of the real meaning of Christmas....family, friends, giving and sharing..........ISH, I just listened to "I need a Silent Night" and the song really says it all :)

Bonnecanyon, the 2 songs you mentioned are part of my favourite Christmas songs. Amethist, I just listened to "Fairy Tale of New York", good song but yes, different :)

I have a lot of favourites, some of them are the older, expected songs we hear every year.....and yet, just as beautiful as if we heard them for the first time.....some make me smile, some make me think, and some touch me so much they make me cry.

Some of my favourites:

Glory To God
First Noel
Feliz Navidad
Hark The Herald the Angels Sing
Joy To The World
Oh Come All Ye Faithful
We Wish You a Merry Chirstmas
Silent Night Holy Night
White Christmas
Petit Papa Noel
Auld Lang Syne
Do They Know it's Christmas
SoThis is Christmas
When A Child Is Born

Sorry ISH, not new original ones....LOL....but beautiful songs just the same !

Frankie

What Child is This - (Greensleeves 1837-1898)
For Unto Us a Child is Born - (Handel's Messiah)
Ding Dong! Merrily on High - (Richard Romiti)

Hehe....yeah. Had to point it out ISH!

I've been thinking a lot of about Christmas music lately (how could I not, its being played EVERYWHERE!) and I seem to only enjoy the sadder songs.
For example... I don't know the name of it but it's been redone by quite a few artists including a band called 'The Used'. They usually use that song for commercials about adopting poor children....

"And a very merry christmas....And a happy new year....lets hope its a good one....with out any tears"

One of the lines in a verse goes something along the lines of how the war is over and we are free now.

Ring a bell anyone? I can't think of the name of it but its the only Christmas song I like and it's kinda sad and slow. I don't know why Christmas is a hard time for me... I don't know the reason. Maybe cause its a very family event and its never gone well/I don't really have a family? I don't know...

Your post got me thinking though, ISH! Thanks...my brain already hurts. Hehe

Jethro Tull did a great one, "Another Christmas Song". The lines that stick in my head at the moment are.

How many wars you fighting out there, This Christmas morning?
Maybe it's always time for another Christmas song
Old man is asleep now
He's got appointments to keep now
Dreaming of his sons and daughters
Proving... proving that the blood is strong

There's some powerful music to accompany it, a la Tull of course. The tune comes into my head every Christmas.

Hi :hello:

For me I have very comforting memories of Christmas songs- not neccessarily of Christmas, but of the songs. I do not fit into a belief system but of course some of my favourite songs are western carols. I have always sung and they remind me of my time with my greatest comfort and influence- my Great Aunt

Coventry Carol
In the bleak midwinter
White Christmas- Phil Spector style. This reminds me of one of my proudest days. My sister who has the best voice I ever heard, sang it at the school Christmas concert and was given an encore. The crowd went CRAZY!
