Chronic headache

I landed myself in hospital (again!) with an out of control headache yesterday, so I feel you! I get stress-related migraine, but also stress-related psychomyogenic headaches. When they piggyback on each other, it gets out of control. Absolutely excruciating. If I start throwing up from the migraine, I quickly become dehydrated, which adds more pain (specifically that part is like an elastic band tightening around the top of my head).

I’m a big big believer that even though the cause may be somatic? Doesn’t mean you can’t find relief. Headaches are really complicated. Even just saying “migraine”, there’s multiple types. There’s different types of preventative meds, there’s different treatments. Tension headaches (muscles at the base of your skull going into spasm and pinching nerves, which have symptoms almost identical to migraine, including photophobia, weird!) need completely different treatment (definitely invest in a trip to a physio for exercises). Then there’s the headaches associated with jaw tension... and on and on.

Point being, headaches are not the simple “painful head” thing that a lot of doctors right them off as. And lots of medications that seem completely unrelated to your head can make them worse. If you’ve seen a doctor and they’ve simply prescribed you standard painkillers and migraine relief? Find another doctor. There are doctors that “get it”, and will understand that figuring out exactly what type of headache, or what type of migraine you’ve got is key, then working with you to figure out what to do to treat your specific headache. When you find a doctor that truly understands headaches, it will change your life!

Somatic issues aren’t something you can resolve quickly or easily. But there is all sprts of different treatments available for headaches. Simply changing something innocuous like cholesterol meds or your OCP can make a huge huge difference. But you have to find the doctor that knows their headaches. Keep a headache journal so you have a full kit of information ready.

This isn’t what your life has to be like for good. Don’t give up:)
