Little late to the Q...I'm American, and I travel... But I learn the language (at least enough to get by, and sheesh don't shout. I never understand tourists who think other people are deaf if they can't -or are pretending not to- understand your rude self) and follow local customs (to the best of my ability*) wherever I go! I only speak 1 language fluently anymore, but I'm conversant in 4, and have a smattering of 11.

* Always mistakes to be made! Most recently: Leeds England, stopped by police and asked 'what my intentions were' before entering the local market. Um. Milk, eggs, paracetamol? Come to find, wearing hoodies is frowned upon. That or my university is looked upon with disdain. Eh. I kind of have to grant that one. We don't own umbrellas in the NW, Stateside. It's perpetual mist and drizzle that blows up under them, in any event. Rain that falls straight down is rare. We just pull our hoods up.

Btw, please tell me "geordie shore" is not an accurate representation of the British night life :nailbiting:

@Snowwhite I've never seen Geordie Shore but as long as the women wear only a tiny mini-dress - or probably much less - even in the snow, then its probably accurate of Geordie nightlife.

Are you sure you're not German?

Hahaha, you might as well have worn a sign saying "Avoiding CCTV cameras". I guess those are a bit pointless in the northwest US then? Or maybe people do drive-through minor crime in the States? In a misguided attempt to fit in, you weren't trying to drive around Leeds market in a mini painted like a union jack were you?

Unfortunately it's not far from the truth. But it's not British nightlife it's Geordie nightlife. And young (i.e. impressionable), lower-middle income, no-shame fame-hungry, production cash fuelled nightlife, at that.

For other 'accurate' representations of colloquial British youth, you can also reference: The Only Way is Essex and Made in Chelsea. Oh I forgot, Magaluf Weekender is also an invaluable insight.:bag: :cautious::D

and there is one about the valleys in Wales too but I forget the name.....[DOUBLEPOST=1405859359,1405859208][/DOUBLEPOST]

LOL...Not a lot of CCTV in the states at all, even less cooperation between the private businesses that have it and the police, and then what little there is is a fight to be able to use it in court. In fact... I live in a "consent state". (About half, I think 28 last time I looked, are "consent states".) Which means that unless you give your consent, you cannot legally be filmed. In my state the idiots who wrote the law didn't leave a loophole in saying that this is null & void if you're caught committing a crime.
