News Does America Need A Civil Revolution?

Yes, but the majority of countries are Commonwealth, Australia being one, so our political system is vastly different from the start, which limits corruption at the levels of power, otherwise we would all endup like the US... which would be destructive, we would have likely had WWIII by now, and whoever survived would be rebuilding as though its 1960 again.

The core of the problem has to change in the US IMHO, being the political level. They have to all be made to change, stop accepting private funding, change the national tax system to be more socialist, so then the Government has an allocation for each party at campaigning, so they all play on equal grounds, not who has most money wins nonsense, which also means who owes the most favours.

Fix that level... then it is forced downwards. This is why I believe the US will hit a point of revolution, when the civilian population has had enough and demands the political system change for the better, or else they are going to riot and march, disrupting everything, until acceptable change is made.

You won't get people to give up their millions until such a thing occurs IMHO.

Oh Lord Vee, I have several desk-shaped dents in my forehead. I know if this thread gets old Anthony wil say 'OK folks, back to business please' but oh my, it's so very, very relevent to SO much. Yes it's chit-chat but it dawned on me yesterday that gosh it's tied in with my personal PTSD etimology in a big fat way. Am I too old to say 'OMG'? The Wisconsin thing- those f***heads. If someone would please explain to me how that was not an example of patent fasicsm ( spelling all shot to heck this morning please excuse ) I'd like to hear it.

This all flattened me to the point of quite literally setting off a series of flashbacks- the courtroom, smug lawyers, the safehouse, the futility of the power structure. My head went there without me-it was an awful, awful day. Yes, poor me with a roof over my head and fighting a muffin top from being well-fed with 1.5 million homeless children strewn about America's streets. No idea why it just did. I think it's partly because it's that and even my parents, who have to gracefully face dying at the moment while we try to figure out how they can DO that while not having to give up everything they own, worked for all their lives, inherited and even sit on, for God's sake. They're not exactly poor people either, but quite well off 'upper middle class' in point of fact. They're both quite ill with staggering medical bills so could lose it all-have nothing. Then that safe house I was in I found out recently no longer exists because of cut backs on a state level. It had been privately funded but some state thing with our new nazi of a governor ( whose first single official act was to wipe out the meager subsidized adult health care program we did have here ) oblitortated it's existance. If that had been when I needed its shelter well, there I would have been somewhere in the crosshairs of someone who wished me dead. I lost my son, daughter in law and grandson to the UK. I'm so sad- it's a blow. Gosh I miss them horribly. They left because they could. Yes,they love Scotland, my son is in a terribly specialized field and was offered a challenging job within it there. The real reason was because they couldn't bear to live here anymore-wished to be in a country where people by and large seem to be the reason the government exists, where health care is for everybody, where you don't step over the homeless bodies and if you carry the passport you're not the target for the kooks who feel Americans need to pay for the damage done to the planet. He's a dual citizen, having been born over there so my grandson is also. They told me when he was born he'd have to give up his duality eventually but I found a lawyer who said that was nonsense 'they' hand out because the Yanks don't like people taking their education and taxes elsewhere. Well, my son left. I do not blame him. He'd rather face the higher taxes there, where they GO for something valuable than here where it's mostly the middle and working classes who support the excesses of the wealthy. So it was all too much yesterday, cumulating in the flat statistics that there are 1.5 million hungry, homeless children sleeping in cars, alleys, whatever in this 'wealthiest country in the world' and noone knew.( and no, the parents of these children interviewed were not drug addicted scum buckets. They were laid-off workers or working people just not able to meet all their bills ) Another signal that the American people are NOT 'told' what the hell is going on. When we are we do not tolerate it, but how to force all the dam media to break ranks as 60 Minutes did and reinvent the political wheel when the wheel is owned my Mega-Corp I do not know.

I'm sorry this is so long, seriously.( I'll refrain from a tangent on the whole 'Freedom to Farm' bill that snuck through Congress some years ago since there's another 6 paragraphs and another dent in my head.) I once wrote an editorial for the local paper about the silly overeaction when France refused to enter the war with Iraq. There was this 'thing' here, to the point where there was a movement to rename 'frenchfries', 'libertyfries'. Please. ( there's no such thing as french fries over there anyway and in the UK they're called 'chips'-don't think the French had their feelings hurt whatsoever). It was ludicrous. I said France's disinclincation to blow up a country based on Dubya's WMD misinformation was laudable.Well- did I hear it- was told to just leave the country if I could not be a 'patriot'. I wrote back, said that every hopeful, barefoot bedraggled Mexican who made it across the border yesterday in the hopes of a better life is an American already, that my family did the same thing in a leaky old boat with an improbably cheerful name a couple hundred years ago and survived long enough to get shot at in every dam war for the sake of the same liberty, were now pretty much genetically American and my idea of being a Patriot is to stand up for everyone's right to be here, be heard, live well and share 'the dream'.

It's hostile here, actually, when one does question the prevailing 'party line'. I think it's going to take most out of their comfort zone to do so, but getting the flat, dreadful facts out there is the only possible way to achieve this. There's no agenda on the part of the huge majority of the citizens behind the 1.5 million children who sleep every night in our borders with no home and empty stomachs, just an abysmal state of affairs noone has been allowed to see because of the agenda of greed and misinformation in the power structure. Again, sorry for the rant and long post. Someone asked me not long ago what message I'd leave my children. I think it would be 'Stay outraged, then do something'.

I was watching that the "Tea Party" is gaining massive momentum in the US at present. That will be interesting!

Did your press really say that? Geesh! That's just beyond frustrating, Why do you people get the NEWS and we don't know that handy bit of information about our own country? Especially about a group of people who have the gall to usurp an iconic symbol from the core of our supposed value structure for their own warped interpretation of who the hell we are- what it all represented in the first place. Tea Party. Well, if other countries wish to see the US in the throes of Civil Revolution I'd have to guess the first misbegotten step towards that inevitable outcome would be a crowned prince of one of those clowns in office here.

If by "massive momentum" you mean that everyone here is making fun of them, then yes. Honestly, I'm starting to suspect that liberals are just jumping on board with the "tea party" because it makes the Republican party look so bad. The awful thing is that they've been pushing moderates out of races everywhere, which has definitely caused a huge rift in the party. I am very curious to see if the Republicans will split.

Lol, well, out here in the super liberal Maryland, it's very common for us to just openly make fun of them. I don't know anyone who openly says that they are part of the "tea party" and most Republicans here usually say something like "I'm a Republican, BUT I'm moderate." The same has been true for most of Virginia from what I can tell (as far as the "tea party" goes). Even my ultra-conservative family members are horribly embarrassed by the "tea party" and abortion clinic bombings that their political group is characterized by. Don't get me wrong, they hate Obama, but they hate the "tea party" just a little bit more.

While I don't like to openly admit it (joking, sort of), I have some friends who are pretty conservative Republicans. They're very active within their political party...even they think that "tea party" people are causing serious problems within the party. I don't think that to say the "Tea Party" is gaining massive momentum is an entirely accurate representation.

From what we got here, it was two fold. There was a sudden interest for one, being 1.5 million members within months had joined it, though the second was that its still a minority, which a majority of America don't endorse.

Still... interesting to see how easy something can be created if it strikes a few nerves correctly, even if most else is garbage. Its like the Green party here... if they ever got power we would be screwed, but for a minority of their policies, we need them to keep the big two honest with the environment. If the Greens had power, Australia would be unlivable with their policy strategies...

At a guess, it seems that outside America they broadcast world news, plus their own country

We had 5 people shot in one day here last week, at different locations across Australia, being the near identical size to the US when comparing land mass, and that made National news here for each incident. A gun shot is major news in this country, as we don't have guns freely available. Freaky ha!!!

This is like Bizarro World then, since you folks more to the SOUTH, supposedly a bastion of conservative power base have a clearer view of things while in this area of PA( around Harrisburg, and I'll defend that. I friggin live here.) they think the tea party is REAL. No kidding. Since I've lived here for 30 years I do think I tend to view things from a little more of a hopeless viewpoint, actually, following pickup trucks everyday with 'Honk if you Love John McCain' bumper stickers, or my favorite- 'America, Love it or I'll shoot you'. Sarah Palin came to Harrisburg ( close by ) and you'd think God's wife rolled into town- people camped out on the sidewalk for tickets to view her 'talk' and the local new buzzed for dayssss. It wears on you.... . When I've gone in to vote, I think there's like 3 registered Democrats at the firehouse. There's like this dead silence and everyone stops eating cake while their eyes follow my back into that booth.Gives you the willies, I can tell you! It's awfully nice to be reminded there's a 'real world' out there, where Democrats roam free and Conservatives really are conservative. :)

Oh, I remember when I lived in the UK, what a striking difference, when there'd been a shooting in London once- NATIONAL news. Now, England is what, the size of PA but still-one shooting- hell, we had one in Harrisburg overnight and there will be another tomorrow, blip on the screen. Freaky indeed! This morning I was just booing over photos of my children having set up house over in the UK and the one comfort is knowing my daughter in law is going to be tooling around a major city over there with my grandson pretty much with impunity. We're so used to this state of affairs it doesn't occur to anyone it could be different. To change it would entail another state of affairs where the criminals and underground elements would be the only ones left armed, plus you'd have to coax all those kook-ball survivalist communities out of their fortified strongholds- who knows how many of those are lurking around here? Some idiot included 'The right to bear arms' in our constitution, which apparently doesn't mean we get to defend ourselves from unfair British rule like you'd think taken in context. Yes, I'm a gun owner but sure as heck do not wave that clause around because it's an idiotic argument.

That is HILARIOUS! Even when I lived in Georgia, they weren't that conservative (though I did live in the more liberal Savannah and near the ultra-liberal Atlanta). This is how liberal we all are. I don't know if you heard about our governor's race, but basically, we had Ehrlich, Republican, elected as governor up until 2006 I believe because he decided that the rich weren't getting enough tax breaks and Marylanders quickly said, "Ah, no thanks, bye". Then we elected O'Malley, Democrat who raised the state tax, fixed some problems with the prison system here, raised taxes on wealthier Marylanders, etc. So Ehrlich ran against him last year and everyone in the state basically just started laughing. He lost embarrassingly. There were some goofballs with the "BRING EHRLICH BACK" signs on their pick-up trucks, but that was definitely not how the majority felt seeing as O'Malley is still our governor.

I think it has a lot to do with most people here being employed by the federal government. We have SSA, NASA, NSA, DOD, and the capital right there. It's definitely a different world here than probably the midwest. I was telling my husband that no one could ever try to bust unions in MD, even though there isn't really a strong union presence here. If our governor tried to do what Walker did, our governor would be out of office TOMORROW. It might be due to our heavy participation in the federal government, or maybe because most of MD is more densely populated than Harrisburg, Lol. I'm not sure.

Oh well, this area seems to be singular, to be sure. It's largely working class, drawing its jobs from the State and what's left of the factories and some industry, although both of the latter have of course been milked away overseas. This was the first place in the US anthracite was mined, the first mine was around 4 miles from where I live. With pretty much the same set-up Pittsburgh for instance grew into the Democratic, don't mess with the working guy town it remains today despite industry going out there. This area is rabidly conservative, despite not getting any glimpse of that piece of the squished American Pie which is held so tantalizingly ( and increasingly ) out of reach for them- they really will uphold it til the death. You just can't budge them. It's like a mini Bible Belt. Probably it's partly cultural, being a huge, huge majority ' PA Dutch', a certain era German immigrant. There wasn't the variety of other cultures providing a mix as in other places like Pittsburgh, where the Slovak, Irish, Welsh and later African American and Latin influences built diversity and tolerance. It's pretty monochromatic, hence singular for a snapshot of America if you think about. You'd THINK they'd insist on some fair, much more equal treatment considering the work ethic here is enourmous and very, very real but nope- by and large they seem willing to pay endlessly through the nose for less and less and support those who do not wish them well in the end .Makes me crazy. There's actually a very conservative church here most of the wealthy people there ARE here belong to which does 'preach' that the rich are chosen by God to be rich. I'm not kidding. Having been surrounded by this for so long has given me a little bit of a myopic view of perhaps where we are, so it is kind of nice to hear from other places where Democrats can graze in peace. :)
