I just read this sleep recipe from Giana Kiali from bipolar blast:

Fill a bath with water as warm as you can tolerate and add;

5 cups Epsom salts

1 cup baking soda

Soak for 10 - 20 minutes and according to her you will sleep like a baby for 7-9 hours.

Haven't tried it yet myself, but will report back when I have!

Probably best to stay away if you take more than the recommended amount because it could suppress your respiratory system. Maybe try a mixture of meds in a smaller dose, like Alteril, over the counter. It has a small doses of melatonin, el-tryptophan and valerian root.

Well, epsom salts in a hot bath were not exactly the miracle cure that was billed. I felt slightly more relaxed than usual, but still woke multiple times.

Back to the lab!

You would want to be careful combining it with other sedatives.
Benedryl and Vistaril are quite similiar, its probably a bad idea to combine these 2. Some people report breathing difficulties when taking these drugs, dizziness upon waking up was also reported but does not nessessarily mean that you will experience these side effects.

I mis-spoke. I have taken both of them. At various times. But NOT at the same time. I've mixed lots of sedatives over the years, but never these two as they work similarly.

I was prescribed Ambien CR and it was the WORST. It made me feel so awful in the mornings, like I had a haze over my eyes and I just couldn't get it to clear. I take promethazine, which is a high powered antihistamine used on cancer patients to alleviate nausea, it works wonders! When I run out, I do take benadryl..about 2 usually puts me down for the night. I still experience night terrors but at least I sleep through them and I don't wake up 4 or 5 times a night like I used too.

Hey thanks for mentioning this Selena. Do you mind if I ask two things?

If yes:

One is - is it ok to take it for long periods of time? Meaning, has it lost it's effectiveness for you at all?

Two is - how long before you go to bed do you take it?

Eat- I take one about 30 minutes before I go to bed and I get extremely sleepy, that's why i like it so much, I don't lay there for three hours waiting for my brain to shut off. And no, it has not lost its effectiveness and I don't think you can build a tolerance to it.

I have two sleeping disorders, non-R.E.M. parasomnia and sleep apnea. I was originally prescribed ambien, even though I told the sleep doctor I was a recovering alcoholic and drug addict of 22 years.I later read that Ambien was in the valium class. I was livid. I took myself off this mood altering chemical immediately. I again asked the doctor to put me on a med that would allow me to sleep and not effect my sobriety. He placed me on benadryl. Benadryl has controlled my sleeping effectively for ten years and I'm still sober.

Now I come to the reason I am posting. I recently went to the dentist because my teeth are in terrible shape. I was informed that benadryl had significantly reduced my saliva. Saliva helps protect your teeth by washing away plaque. I was told to quit taking the medication, because over the last ten years, I had lost almost a third of my teeth. Yes I do brush.

I have found a great solution. Recently I discovered Alteril. It does not inhibit saliva production, so it will not cause the same dental complications.I receive a great night sleep.I find it better for sleep than benadryl.I only use a quarter of alteril's recommended dosage. It is inexpensive. It is all natural, and it contains tryptophan.
Tryptophan is the only substance on the planet that creates serotonin . Those of us on anti-depressants will recognize that serotonin controls depression. Tryptophan also helps to control appetite.

Let me recap. Bendryl is effective for sleep but using it may lead to tooth decay.Ambien is a mood altering chemical and is therefore inappropriate for recovering addicts. Alteril is an all natural substance that has mood enhancing properties. Alteril is great for sleep. I believe that it is likely that fewer nightmares will occur on Alteril. Please contact your doctor before using any medication.
I do not work for Alteril and I am not an expert. I'm just saying...

I have used benedryl for years (no tooth decay) for sleep and even at times for day time anxiety (small doses). It works quite well. However, I find there are side effects.

1) I feel more depressed when I use it then I do when I am not using it
2) There is uneven response. Sometimes it doesn't do a thing, sometimes I am out for 10 hours
3) I am fairly sleeping the next day

I had an allergist tell me people should drive even with one dose and its worse then drinking and driving. That is worth keeping in mind.

I got lunesta for sleep. I have been taking it for 18 months nightly (besides a night here and there). It gets me to sleep and keeps me asleep without side effects. If I have any caffeine after 5pm, it just doesnt work at all...or if I have too much in the day. The up side is that as soon as I have coffee in the morning, it totally reverses the effects.
