Dog In Crate 12 Hours, Is This Cruel?

Thank you so much! I tried to find out but ended up on, apparently, a malicious site that looked like the AKC and had AKC in it's web address as a link on it brought me to a virus, where for the millonth time, I had to clear data and again loose everything on my browser.

That was the day I dumped Avast and bought Kapersky. One day I will dump android and go with Apple.

Anyway, they didn't say no chokers. Said slip on collar that could be made of chain so i'm assuming that's ok. He pulls me over otherwise. Something else we need to work on more. He knows "wait" but I haven't trained on "heel" because i end up tripping on him. Maybe I need training too lol. He doesn't go far and waits for me on command and usually by himself. I do need to start usually a normal leash as I use the retractable kind.

Where did you go do the training? Just a normal trainer?

Please for the love of all things holy of youre going to do it make sure it's legit. At the zoo people pass off fake service dogs all the time.

Also know that not everywhere accepts emotional support animals. We don't. But we do accept PTSD dogs. Just a heads up.

The class we took was advertised in the local paper. (I live in a small town/rural area.) As it happens, the woman who taught it competes in agility with her dogs and teaching others is one of the things she does. You might check with your vet & see if there's anyone they'd recommend. Otherwise, check for local dog groups. In your case, maybe even check out "bully breed" groups. That way you won't have to deal with "oh no! And pit bull!" It never hurts to works with an instructor who likes your dog.

@Zoogal, I plan to do it legit if I do it at all. I would never fake a service animal, and if I did I'd be all paranoid I'd get caught.

Thanks for the heads up of emotional service dog vs PTSD. I don't know if *needing my dog due to my intense fear of people, and would help me to actually go places* is emotional severice dog or a PTSD service dog because though it's PTSD issue, it's an emotion, fear.

But I don't want to think about that now. Lets see if my dog to pass the CGC. That would be cool to train him in those things anyway. A lot of it he is already very well trained in but some of it it he isn't and it would be nice if he was. Management of him would be less.

I'm trying to create some sort of sound, like The Dog Whiperer does, to get his attention when he has lost attention to me outside. I haven't found one yet but I think that would help to regain his attention.

In any case, short term, trying to do this means I'm forced up and out and that is very good for me...if I do it.

Thanks @scout86! I was thinking a normal dog training but wasn't sure. I guess once trained (by me or a trainer) then it's just a test by the AKC.

I'll look for a bully training or at least ask if a pitbull in the class is normal as I can see ignorant people taking their dogs and leaving. They would suck. Would likely hit on my abandonment issue and be counter productive so that is important.

I havent @DharmaGirl. I was going to try a no pull harness but havent tried a halti. What's the difference in it (knowing he often pulls me over with a normal collar. His neck is strong but he is strong in general)?

I'm working on his walking closer to me and waiting if he gets ahead of me. I think shorting the retractable or getting a normal leash and getting him used to not being able to walk/run ahead, would be a good first step before changing to a harness/halter.

There was a pit bull in the class we took. And I have to admit, I was a little leery. He belonged to an older lady what was a bit on the frail side AND kind of out of touch with what he was doing. He was a nice dog and there was never an issue but if there HAD been an issue, it would have gotten ugly long before she got herself in gear. When I lived in FL (years ago) I knew a guy who trained dogs & he commonly had pit bulls in his classes. I don't think you'll have a problem with that.

I've been using something they call a 'gentle leader' on my guy. (It sounds like there's a variety of halter-like devices for dogs these days.) Chip is pretty high energy and kind of likes to pull. (He could be part sled dog of some sort for all I know.) With the gentle leader, he's a different dog. He doesn't like it, but he's a lot less likely to be distracted. Apparently, at one time, you could use one of these to take the CGC test, but no longer. I suppose that's subject to change, depending on how the AKC feels about it. It might help you keep him under control though. Because it's on their head, they just don't have the idea that pulling on it is something they wanted to do. The change in Chip was immediate. I don't use it all the time, but I do use it if we're going to be around a lot of people or other dogs.

The theory is that a pack leader will grab others in the pack by the jaw to correct them. The halti goes on their head like a horse's halter, and you guide them and show them you are the pack leader at the same time. I never use a retractable leash. I have a short leash and Nugget's vest has a handle to help steady me. Nugget knows when she has her vest on, she is working and not allowed to notice other dogs or people. If I let someone pet her, she wants to greet everyone.

I was thinking about getting one of those. Didn't know how well they worked.

I think the AKC site said a training leader that goes around there head/muzzle was ok.

I shyed away from it as many see something around their muzzle and assume its an actual muzzle and then assume he is mean when he isn't.

But either way, a good way to train how to not pull, here at home, for sure. I'll order one on Amazon today. Do you have a favored brand?

@DharmaGirl, when I google "halti" i get some that are Gentle Leader, (i guess that is a brand, for a Halti) and some that aren't around the muzzle. It says "halti headcollar" and "halti harness". So i am assuming you are advising of the head collar, that goes around the muzzle?

Another issue is my parents very untrained and very misbehaving chihuahua, Coco. Coco barks at EVERYTHING, and everybody. Chopper, my guy, never used to and is very quiet when he is there alone. Inside. The moment he goes outside he thinks it is ok to bark at everyone. So i am working a lot with him right now to correct him.

Also, due to that same thing, Chopper thinks it is ok to bark at people when chillin in my screened in porch. I obviously, sternly command "quiet" and "lay down"; which works. But my step mom lets him out there a lot with her when she is smoking and she cannot seem to advise him sternly so he doesn't listen. I keep telling both my step mom & dad to stop letting him bark, to bring him in if he won'r stop and for whatever reason, my dad thinks it's funny. He says "oh, he is just protecting me". Maybe, but he is trained not to so f*cking re-enforce it.

Anyway, all of this may not be possible until they move at the first of the year because he is becoming a bit untrained as I train him. Or some of his training is slipping & I have to re-enforce it more.

I need to secure a dog walker by then too. Not sure if someone on rover.com is into meeting me and Chopper first and meet up a bit at places so i can get to know the person a little bit before handing over my key, and my dog.

Not sure how all of that works as the person needs a key so do they keep it and is that the only person that walks him, like every day? @Poofycat, you mentioned rover.com in here at about the same time I did. I've been to the site but never used them. Do you know if they keep a key to your place and would they normally be ok with meeting a person and their dog first? I am just really scared to give a stranger the key to my house to walk my dog.

Sigh! Anyway, i'm getting all freaked out over something months ahead. Its just that it will be here and i want to plan ahead. The training for CGC or any foward training for a service dog, some or most of the training he needs won't fully happen until they move. But there are still things I can do. Get a headcollar like a gentle leader or a halti and a normal leash and bring him around more people like the pet store, a park, anywhere where pers are allowed and a lot of people are there. That I can do now so he is more used to being around people.

I am self isolated so it makes my animals isolated as well so that will be good for the both of us and since it's framed as training my dog, it seems less scary too.
