I've wondered about this too.With so many idiots like Trump, Santorum et al. Jeb Bush starts to look/sound sane (is that the strategy? One has to wonder)
I think Trump is fundamentally 'entertainment', something like sending out the rodeo clown before the next bull. I'd be shocked if the party actually let him get through...he's right now just the ultimate opposite of Obama. Trump is loud, inappropriate, blatantly decisive, and gives no f*cks what anyone thinks about it. Obama is reflective, appropriate, soft-spoken, even cautious, at least in appearance. All the upcoming Democratic hopefuls have a kind of cerebral quality, and the Republican strategy seems to be simply to burst that bubble of 'thinking', have people feel like things could really happen.
But I also believe that the parties are much more in control of the whole slate of candidates than people tend to think. And, electoral college, don't forget. All votes may be counted, but not all votes count.
