Good God, I thought W was bad. Now if I had a choice between W and Trump? Hands down for W. But, thank God that is not our choice right now.

I do not consider Hillary a particularly likeable person, but I would really like to hear from anyone who has a rock solid critique against her. She's our only alternative to Trump and I have no problem voting for her. To me, she is absolutely a sane alternative. In order to not burden this thread with another topic, please pm me about your thoughts rather than post them here, unless JMH approves this. Otherwise, I should probably start a new thread.

Trump is so much more shrewd than I gave him credit for. Now I understand what he is doing, pandering to the anti social political incorrect. The great tattooed masses and younger generation sick of the laws of the land. The younger generation is not happy with the democrats for the most part in my opinion based on the teenagers I have talked with. I have tattoos as well but I am not a Trump fan at all. But since Gen X things have gotten very sour for these generations.

It created a huge backlash I think.

Hmm, interlude? Just for the purposes of furthering all our healing, which is undoubtedly compromised by our larger situation, I would just like to suggest this American classic from a young La band: Link Removed

I usually listen to the local PBS radio station at night. Last night, after the convention, they had a call in show. There was a refreshing number of Republicans calling in who don't support Trump. I was glad to hear that at least some of the people at the convention are looking past the side show. Several commented that they had yet to hear an actual plan described. I think that's encouraging.

As far as Hilary Clinton goes...... There are a couple of things I don't like about her. First, let me say that I think she's smart and hard working and those are both good things. But, I have the impression that she's inclined to think the ends justify the means. I don't get the impression that "Ethics" is real important to her. I'm a bit more comfortable dealing with someone I know I disagree with, but who I feel I can count on to act based on their own, well thought out, ethical code. (I actually kind of like Paul Ryan, although I disagree with him on most policy matters.) I think she's a little more inclined than some to get us involved in another war. I deeply believe there are things worth fighting for and worth dying for if it comes to that, but not stupid shit. Not off the cuff, no plan what's to follow stuff. Like Iraq. I know she had nothing to do with that, other than voting for it, I just have a sense (maybe wrongly) that she'd go to war to prove a point. Last, but not least, she comes off as a "my way or the highway" kind of person. Again, this is my impression and I'd have a hard time finding a fact to support it. But, I rarely hear her credit someone else with a good idea. I rarely (if ever) have heard her suggest that someone else has a valid point of disagreement with her. I'm concerned about the apparent divisions in our country and I don't think you work through that by chucking rocks at your opponent. I think, to do that, you need to listen more than talk and to think about what you've heard. In the end, I think most people in this country value the same basic things and share the same basic concerns. I think that both political parties have deliberately stirred up fear and hatred based on very little to serve their own ends. But we won't get past that being led by someone who wants to contribute to the problem.

Obviously, I think she's a WAY better choice than Trump. But, I really agree with Jesse Ventura, that the only wasted vote is one cast for someone you don't believe in. So I'm not so sure who I'm going to vote for. Wish we could do "None of the above"!

I'm watching the Cruz speech live. I'm not in the bag for Cruz, there are a number of things concerning about Cruz, but he was a better choice than Trump. It is an extremely serious speech, unlike all the previous rah-rah speeches that called for everyone to chant various things. Lion Ted ;) is doing well before an audience that doesn't like him. He started off the speech talking about comebacks.... for America. Hmm.

Cruz is NOT endorsing Trump or expressing outright support for him though. He talked about Hillary and then says, "there is a better vision for America, and it is a return to freedom!" Every time someone else would sing the praises of Trump, Cruz talks about freedom. Cruz even talked about protecting protesters.

Which Trump does NOT do! It's a speech to support the republican party (which is dead), because he is a republican and this is a republican convention... but he isn't supporting Trump. YES! I will take every small victory and movement of leaders away from Trump. Cruz is now calling for voting in favor of the down ticket (all the other republican candidates.)

The Trump children are not clapping much for Cruz, unlike the crowd, not even when he called for the building of a wall. It's a little awkward.

Now there is massive booing.... BECAUSE HE SAID TO "VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE!" Massive massive booing!

Sorry for my over-excitement, but this is pretty big. As far as I know, but has never happened at a convention in modern history. The brand new "Vote Your Conscience" grassroots organization started last night, and it was officially launched today! Why is everyone booing? It's being lead by Kendall Unruh! YES! She is the leader of the #neverTrump delegates! She met with Cruz today and word went around at the convention about the movement (she is getting the now expected death threats for it. Sigh.) Their whole effort was to pass the conscience clause, which would have allowed the delegates to not vote for Trump if they didn't want to. They failed at that, and Kendall is getting tons of crap, but she hasn't quit - she just got Cruz's backing!

Cruz just told everyone to vote their conscience! Cruz issued the strongest support not for Trump, but for the GOP leaders of the #neverTrump movement!!! The New York Delegation then began to try to shout down Cruz. It was almost funny. Cruz must have expected it because he didn't show he was rattled at all. He thanked them for their enthusiasm. Thanked them!

As Cruz continued to tell people to vote their conscience for the down ticket and did not express any support for Trump, but continued to use that phrase to express support for that movement by Kendall, et all, everyone chanted "we want Trump, we want Trump" - Trump then walked into the arena, which was NOT planned or expected to happen at all tonight, clearly trying to pull all the attention away from Cruz and shut Cruz down. It clearly made Trump uncomfortable.

Wow, JMH!! I am awestruck!! Good for Cruz, good for Kendall! I'm about ready to hit the bed. Maybe I will expose myself to MSNBC coverage now while lying in bed:-) It sounds more safe now, haha. That troll! He always has to intrude.

Good night @hodge! I'm headed for bed soon myself. Sweet dreams!

Even if people don't like Cruz, if they are against Trump, I hope Cruz gets a little credit for that awesome stand in favor of the #neverTrump elements in his own party. YAY!

If you are for Trump, I hope you respect Cruz's courage to speak in a hostile environment like that, without calling for violence or riots, but instead actually thanking people for their enthusiasm. THANKING THEM. Not insulting them. Cruz didn't seek to silence anyone. I hope this is valued, even if his speech offended you. All the voices should be valued, especially with how much it is valued for Trump to speak his mind even when he offends a substantial portion of his audience.

@scout86 Hillary may be a "my way or the highway" , but I see her highway as being the route paved with rough gravel and potholes as opposed to trumps hedge maze with brambles and thorns that will get anyone he feels opposes him stuck and unable to progress anywhere.

With trump theres too much to change, tame, and rearrange with him making even attempting to get us on the road to better times, equality and peace in our nation.

With Hillary yep it may be ugly, bumpy, rough to drive, and hell in the bad weather, but it is still a road. Poor pavement to me is better than no road at all and division.

I wish the nevertrump movement well and hope their efforts can change this situation.

Watching Chris Christie with his "Hillary conviction tribunal" was scary and disturbing.
