Early Menopause (aka Pof)

Just had my hormones tested after experiencing a variety of menopause like symptoms in the past two years. My hormones were basically in the same range as a postmenopausal woman. My doctor thinks that my ovaries gave up on themselves as a result of being so stressed out, possibly being poisoned as a child, or hemochromatosis (I'm Irish, but my ferritin was only 170 ng/ml + she has yet to test my TS% and HFE). My liver enzymes were about five times above the normal range a few weeks ago, but I think that's because I had a can of tuna. I avoided seafood entirely for five weeks and they back into the normal range. Got tested for PCOS and came back as negative. She doesn't want to put me on HRT. Still waiting for my adrenals and antiovarian antibodies to come back. I guess this means my family can no longer blame my symptoms on my teenage hormones!

Have any of you ladies here dealt with an early menopause as a result of stress and/or PTSD? These hot flashes and memory lapses are driving me nuts. :coffee:

When you say early menopause, do you mind sharing how old you are?

As a sufferer of PCOS. And infertility, my hormone levels have never been normal - but I don't *think* I have reached the menopause yet. However in all seriousness I have asked my GP how will I know. She is going to look into it and Get back to me ....

I am sixteen. I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2014 after my mom died and my periods got really wacky from there. I've only had two accidents since then. My doctor said that she's seen POF in some girls my age, and she's not really sure why.

I know it's fairly common for the reproductive system to partially to entirely shut down in response to severe-extreme stress, but then it starts back up again once stress levels are lowered.

I would expect that in order for menses to stop that there would have to be some serious hormone level tinkering.

AKA what I wonder is if everyone whose whose reproductive system has temporarily shut down in response to stress would test -chemically- as post menopausal? I have no idea what the answer might be.

My FSH came back on the higher end, so that's why my doctor thinks POF as opposed to a temporary hormone imbalance. I guess I'll just have to wait another six months without an accident until I'm considered fully menopausal and we'll see what happens.

What do you mean by accidents? Do you mean traumas or something different? ( this may well be a cultural difference in language)

Holy moly, 16?!?! I'm so sorry!! I had an early menopause. It started when I was about 36. I can't say for sure that it was stress related because my aunt also started menopause around that age, and neither of us ever had children, so I think that can be a factor also.

That makes sense. I know that pregnancy makes your estrogen levels really high. I think my mom developed peri symptoms when she was 40. My grandma on my dad's side didn't go through an early menopause, but she definitely had fertility issues. Fortunately, soy and flaxseed products seem to help with my hot flashes. I feel like I should write a book or something! :hilarious:
