Facebook Launching Suicide App Where Friends Can Report Friends They Think At Risk

I think even if the intention behind this is meant well, it is a bad idea, inter laden with ignorance & lack of understanding, & holds great potential for life-destroying abuse, like others have said. And pre-generated responses, well dare I say that's part of the problem? I don't think you have to apologize @Lizio for noticing that human, engaged & sincere (re)action to your needs is all that makes an impression for you.

I think that 'Joe Q. Public' might b surprised, for eg, if all the depressive-types were out of sight (every vocation including most comedians!), the anxious ones were removed (which could include your surgeon, pilot, etc etc), & the list goes on. The conditions may be invisible but hardly uncommon. Not with statistics what they are.

A bit off the subject, but perhaps more useful is a tag line I came across somewhere (can't remember where) which was what @Lizio said above, about genuine talking/ support/ (listening), followed by "See you tomorrow?" as the comment/ focus/ thought.

I guess get through the day & focus on tomorrow & try to think of tomorrow= good. (And/or stability/ presence/ not alone, etc maybe?)

Something I found and read somewhere was about a person trying to find work. If you have a FB page it can and will be used against you, and if you have don not have one you are no one. Billions for trolling. And the new baby. Mea Culpa, I give of my billions to tax deferment and my to my legacy untold wealth as a babe to rule by billions.

What really creeps me out with this, is the impersonal nature of it. This looks to me like a way to cop out of an awkward situation. Maybe they should change the name to "Flakebook".

Imagine you have a friend who is stuck in a miserable divorce. This person then says something to make you concerned about their safety. So you log into facebook, report your friend to this service. Then what happens?

The way that it sounds from the article, you aren't supposed to do anything really. Now that the "proFaceionals" have been alerted, you can just go back to whatever you were doing without giving it second thought. Is this going to be the new fad?

I know if I really felt that a friend or family member was going to harm themselves in the near future. Logging into the Facebook, is not my first choice of suicide intervention. Here in Canada, a person who is deemed to be a danger to themselves or others, can be arrested and taken to hospital for psychiatric assessment, under the mental health act.

It is not a mean thing to do to someone, at least not here. What most often happens, a police car shows up at the persons residence, they ask a few basic questions. Then one of two things happens, the person has a calm rational chat with the officer's for a few minutes, then is told to have a nice evening. Or if they are appearing to be in an altered mental state, or exhibiting other signs they are not safe to be left alone, they will be taken to hospital for psychiatric assessment.

If after this assessment it is found that the patient is indeed safe, they will be discharged from hospital. After at most 12 hours, a sizeable inconvenience sure. But usually it doesn't take that long.

Have people had terrible experiences at the hands of police and hospital staff in these kinds of situations? Sure. Everyone has heard a horror story from every occupation ever.

I would rather someone be mad at me for ruining their evening, than to do next to nothing and find out later they died, believing no one cared about them enough to even pick up a phone and call either them or EMS.

Just an anonymous alert on social media, that's the new line between life and death?

Appalling.

I do have to wonder, though, how effective it might be for people who are suffering from suicidal ideation not from trauma/PTSD?
