Hi, so first time post.... I got diagnosed a few years ago with ptsd. I have a hard time accepting that. Im just coming to terms with the fact i need help. Does anyone have experience with treatment with edmr? Im trying to deal with childhood abuse emotional and physical, race related violence and other types of violance and sexual abuse. I see a therapists and we are actually meeting today to discuss more intensive trauma focused therapy. Emdr had been mentioned...but I've been cautioned about it.

Hi and welcome :)

I've read here a lot if people saying EMDR made a huge difference for them. I've been told I am not stable enough for EMDR mysrlf yet. But hope to try it in the future.

EMDR can be very effective in healing trauma. I'm mostly a supporter, have had some small-t trauma and some symptoms, and EMDR helped me work through it.

The first thing your therapist will probably do with you is build up your positive resources (with and without EMDR) and help you learn useful grounding exercises. When you have some sense of safety you'll be in a good spot to use EMDR. It can shake things up inside, so it's a good idea to have some support, from the therapist or from others, when you're doing it. The last time I used it, my brain was fuzzy and I was off balance for a few days.

There is an EMDR therapist who posts here sometimes. If you search around you will find earlier threads about it, particularly in the Therapy folder I think.

Ok. I am researching it as my possible next step. My partner highly recommends it. But I've also been warned by other therapists you have to make sure you have a really good one..it makes me nervous. Thank you for the responses.

It is extremely important to have a good one. Also one that feels safe. I was amazed at how quickly I connected with mine.

Hi @Lynn11 and welcome to the forum.
I too have found EMDR very helpful and would highly recommend it.

Just curious - why are you 'other' rather than sufferer when you say you have a PTSD diagnosis?
