I prefer my nightmares in bed where they belong, instead of in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon, whilst driving >.< . But, yes. I have 3 classes of nightmares: flashbacks, blends of reality and fiction, and pure fiction. The true flashbacks are pretty rare for me, the ones that are blends of fiction and reality are my standard fare when dealing with trauma.
All 3 though can drop kick me into either an anxiety attack, or panic attack. But they suck pretty hardcore even without those added joys.
One trick for waking up soaked? Put a couple different layers of sheets & mattress protectors on your bed. Mattress protector, sheet, mattress protector, sheet, etc. That way, when you wake up you can just strip off the top 2 wet layers and you have a nice dry bed already made for you.
When I’m in nightmare cycles I tend to just strip the sheets, dump them in the hallway, strip my wet PJs, step into a shower (rinsing the stink of fear away, in addition to the sweat),climb into dry PJs, and fall back into bed. Elapsed time about 90 seconds.
Not if you remember it, or wake up feeling :wtf:
It has the sexier name, but it’s named that more because of the effect it creates for OTHER people. As you’ll appear wide awake, but not be aware of anyone/anything around you, not be able to be woken up (including some pretty violent/extreme methods by terrified parents or spouses) and -generally- screaming. When you DO wake up after a night terror? Everyone else will be freaked, but you? No memory of it. And probably feeling pretty darn good / like you got a nice long uninterrupted sleep. They’re actually far more closely related to sleepwalking than dreaming/nightmares.
Rule of thumb
- Nightmares suck for you
- Night terrors suck for everyone else
