Flowers Or A Plant As A Gift

Hello,

I have a bit of a different question. My therapist who I have been seeing for about 6 months now has been wonderful. She is always there when I have a question for her, and she is going beyond her duties to help me. This Monday is Thanksgiving here in Canada. Would I be out of line if I gave my therapist a card and maybe a plant, or some flowers? It's just a thank you gesture, but maybe it's not proper etiquette? Just thought I'd ask.

Thank you

Here in the states it's against the rules of ethics to accept any kind of gift from a client. Cards usually don't count / are acceptable (it runs a very low risk of costing them their license if anyone reports them). It depends on the therapist if they accept them, or thank them for the thought but hand it back unopened & explain that they are not allowed. I don't know what the ethical guidelines & practices are in Canada.

The ethical guidelines in the states aren't actually that rigid. They don't specifically address gifts, but usually people do the $5 rule--if it costs less than $5, then it is probably okay.

I don't know whether there are rules for this nationwide or not, but I did once have a therapist who told me as a matter of course in the first session that she would not be allowed to accept gifts from clients. I've worked with a few other therapists and none of them ever mentioned this, so I don't know if it's an official guideline or not. Could you ask her, just so you know in the future?

It was nice of you to think of her though!
