First off, after some initial perusals of this site, what a fine group of people you are to keep such a loving, tightly-knit community.

I'm a 20/30ish man who has recently started dating a great girl with PTSD (not sexual abuse, rather trauma from an event in the not so distant past). Normally, I'd run screaming for the hills presented with the option of dating someone with such a life altering illness, but this girl is terrific enough as a person that it's worth breaking rules.

As a young man in my late teens, I survived my own bouts of serious depression (not suicide attempts, but I self hospitalized myself several times) and have lived through enough brunt trauma that I certainly understand how one could find themselves in such a place.

I've been researching her particular element of the illness, and various elements of the affliction so I can go into this with my eyes wide open (for one, I understand I can't change her or make her better. I'm going to have to be a solid rock and support net for her. And that's fine by me, I'm capable of doing it). But, so far I'm noticing several symptoms: event triggering (gunshots in the distance), emotional avoidance (big time, both in conversation and as a result of interaction).

I'm just wondering if anybody has any advice, pointers, suggestions, articles, or books to recommend.

Look at the articles on the main page about PTSD and many related topics. You will find those very helpful and there is one about books too. I found the PTSD Relationship book helpful. Look in the Carer sections there and in posts, and you will find lots of helpful information. Post questions and you will get feedback on them too.

Good luck,

Jawn

Welcome to the forum.

There's plenty to read here. And also many sufferes and carers of PTSD to guide you along the way.

All the best,

Welcome!

I feel like I've learned a lot from all of the sections of this web page - the carer section seems most relevant, but in some ways reading the rest of the site has given me a lot more perspective than the just the carer section.

Best of luck,
Clyde
