I served in the 160th SOAR 2BN and 4BN with the US Army. I served as an avionics mechanic 15N on MH47-G helicopters. I have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was medically retired in 2010. Feels like yesterday. Not sure why since I don't work. I am using my GI Bill to get a degree in Psychology. Ironic right? Yes, I have been diagnosed with PTSD and my biggest problem is depression. I am dealing with it one day at a time and studying the brain.

Welcome Joseph.
Cool deal I'm positive we could use more veteran psychologists.
Good to have you here.

Joseph.

Have you studied, or been exposed to Cognitive Process Therapy? If not, it's a process that helps you find better ways to look at a problem or situation. It's helped me a great deal in handling my depression.

The training that made you an effective soldier can cause huge problems in civilian life because many warrior techniques don't work in the world you live in now. Looking through warrior's eyes will keep you from seeing what those around you see, and will keep you from working your way back into a world that can be very foreign to a veteran.

You will always be a warrior. That never changes. But, you can learn to view things in ways that will help you through the depression that we all feel in a world where we no longer fit.

Not sure it its the same. I went through a therapy where you are taught how to control your emotions and think like a normal congnitive critical thinker. It has helped me a lot because I was a trigger waiting to be pulled. Now I am much more calm.
Still have the depression, but I am not picking trouble when the situation doesn't even call for it.
Take care,
Joseph

Afternoon. I did something similar when I left in 2011, which also feels like yeaterday. Anyway, I think it helped a bit.

Good luck with it all.
Thanks,
I spent 3 years of it drinking my ass off. That helped. But still 6.5 years has moved fast. Moving to Mexico helped me chill out. I live in a smaller town like the states where everyone is nice. Thinking about moving back to the states next year. Had to reset the brain and make better choices about who my friends and family are. Ya know...lol
