Hi folks, my name is Philip Hyland, and I'll just give you a brief introduction.

I live in Dublin, Ireland. A few years back I had a pretty bad cancer scare and I began to suffer some pretty painful and distressing psychological consequences. This had a massive effect on my life because it led me to begin studying psychology as I was fascinated with how such an experience could have such a profound effect on my mental health....I also wanted to understand why I responded the way I did so that I could overcome my psychological problems. Fortunately enough, I received excellent psychogical therapy and fully recovered and now my time is devoted to better understanding PTSD and helping others overcome its effects. I have just begun a Ph.D in psychology investigating these issues and I am greatly enjoying the experience.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm glad that you were/are able to turn a negative experience around into a positive, in order to help others.....

Cancer is scary my mom had it this time last year, but is well now, just have the countless follow up apointments from now till forever....anyways, I'm glad your better.

Welcome Philip

I would be interested to hear what sort of psychogical therapy you received, and really pleased it was so helpful :)

Take care and keep well

Hi Philip,

Welcome to the Forum! I am also in a Ph.D. program and just had my dissertation approved by my advisor. I am not studying PTSD or anything clinical. My field is Developmental Science, which is part of the umbrella of psychology. I am looking at Deafness, perceptual development, language development, and how to make medical settings more accessible for Deaf people as well as their providers.

I am very glad that you were able to recover from your PTSD and that the cancer scare was just that, a scare. My mother is going through breast cancer treatment and fighting the cancer with everything she can. Chemo for her was pretty uneventful for her. She is currently experiencing a number of side effects from the surgery. On Nov. 3, ironically her birthday, she will begin radiation.

Best wishes on your journey!

Hi Philip,

Welcome to the forum! I am sure you can share a lot with us from both your experiences and studies. I can only imagine how distressing the cancer experience is, but I am glad to hear you are well.

I'm finishing my Masters early next year and then will begin my PhD (fingers crossed). Having seen my hubby complete his PhD, I know how much work goes into it and the commitment required. Good on you for perusing such a challenge!

Welcome.
