I’m the therapist friend who can give good advice to everyone but I can never take my own.

I found out some advice ideas from both me and some other people about what I’ve been going through lately. Only problem is I’m incapable of taking my own advice. How do I take my own advice?

Sometimes we don’t take our own advice because deep down, we don’t fully believe it applies to us. That’s where the real work is—figuring out why we hold ourselves to a different, often harsher, standard than we do for others.

But you already know what to do. You give great advice for a reason. Now, it’s about trusting yourself enough to actually follow it.

my advice seeking/giving was one of the first symptoms to be addressed in my own recovery. my therapy supporters, both pro and peer, insisted i was using the process as a form of deflection. giving and seeking advice is a whole heap easier than taking advice.

it has taken me decades to understand what they were trying to tell me, but i might be getting it. for sure it's allot easier for me to put advice into action when i am not confusing myself with more advice than one body can possibly put into action in a single lifetime. i focus better when i am neither seeking nor giving advice. just sharing experience.

Choose different advice.

“I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.” Is very Alice in wonderland, but not very IRL.

AKA? You’re SHITE at advice from lived experience, just great at culturalistic ideals, which others latch onto. Okay. That helps them. But not you. Nor anyone else who needs real advice.

So ignore the culture, and go for real. What you actually know, from your own lived experience. Or? BS milk carton / fortune cookie / “should” be / cultural nonsense…Can f*ck off, and you need advice from the trenches.
