My family is stranger than most, but man o man, have they reached a new low.
My 81yr old mother has been visiting for the holidays and became ill a few days ago. She insisted she didn't need to go to the hospital, but after a partial recovery day before yesterday followed by a return of all her symptoms by late afternoon yesterday, I called an ambulance to have her transported.
From the waiting room in the ER I sent a group text, informing all that she was being admitted, her symptoms, and asked that they refrain from calling, as I would keep them updated when I knew more.
My 2 brothers and niece immediately began calling the hospital and my mothers cell, while texting me that I do no have power of attorney and cannot make any decisions. They accused me of withholding information, refusing to "divulge" the truth.
In fact, I do have power of attorney in the state of Oregon, and ironically one of my brothers was the co-signer for the advanced directive. But their immediate jump to life and death decisions seemed inappropriate and shocking.
Later, while at my mom's side in her hospital room, she confessed that one of my brothers, weeks earlier, had told family members and called a few of my mom’s friends to inform them that I am “ poisoning" her. Since my mom went to the hospital last time she visited, he was convinced I was plotting against her. Imagine how he is spinning now…
I feel dirty. WTF? Really? And they call me the crazy one. The only thing stranger than my brother coming up with this ludicrous concept is that people believe him! Still, I can no longer afford to assume I am safe from these ridiculous lies. SICKOS.
