Invisible Bruises?

Hey. I'm sorry if I've been cluttering up the boards, I have a lot of different questions to ask. I didn't know an online PTSD community existed (as I'm not ready for a specialist or anything like that) and I feel really comfortable with asking this website questions that I've been wanting answers for, for over the past year (since I first acknowledged that I might have PTSD).

So if I'm bothering anyone with too many posts or if I'm posting in the wrong place, please let me know. Sometimes I get frantic and post where I assume to be the right place.

Anyways, I'm posting now because I have this very strong-feeling bruise on/around my right eye. As I suffered from prolonged physical abuse, there were definitely times that I had to put that creamy 'cover up' makeup all over my face, in order to make it not look suspicious or draw anyone's attention(besides that they might tell me I'm wearing too much makeup) because of a black eye.

Having bruises on my face were always the worst, because I had to actively make sure throughout each day that they were covered well. I was so afraid of someone noticing. They were constant reminders.

The abuse happened 5-6 years ago but I occasionally get these 'phantom' bruises on one/both of my eyes. There's no visible bruising, but right now I can feel water swelling in my eye and I feel that bitter bruise feeling whenever I blink. It even feels puffy, like it would be obvious. But there's zero visibility.

Can anyone explain this to me? Is there anything I can do for it? I get the same feelings in various parts of my body, it's just more noticeable when it's my eye/face, and sometimes these feelings will last for up to two weeks.

A more specific question; are these 'bruises' real or imaginary?

Hi Sharky,

It almost sounds like a body memory. You might want to search the forum to find more information on this, as I am not sure I am using the correct name.

I have had similar things in the past, but they were fleeting and did not last for any substantial length of time.

Hope this helps.

Debbie

Hey Sharky. :) Don't ever worry about posting too many things or cluttering up the boards. Asking questions is how people learn and everyone here is learning all the time. Ask away...;)

As a nurse, you could be experiencing residual nerve sensitivity in that area. Our faces are filled with a lot of sensitive nerves. Anxiety and worry and any mild scar tissue can leave those areas feeling inflamed and tender. With PTSD our entire body is on alert 24/7 for threats. Sometimes that stress carries over into our physical bodies. I don't think there is just one answer, but perhaps chat to your doctor about it.

Take care and keep asking questions!

Thank you so much G. I will definitely keep this in mind. It definitely puts me at some ease putting a face to the name, if you know what I mean.

Thank you!
