Hi, Im new and so HI to all of you and thank you for being here for me (and yourselves!).I have been looking for a good PTSD place for some much needed help advice and support and I promise to try my best to do the sAme for all of you if I can. I am sorry this is so short i promise i will definately be back.
I am a 45 y/o full time carer of a 50 y/o army vet with PTSD (yep, im sure many of you know what fun it is) I love him dearly in every way...cant say the same for the ol' PTSD, but hey, for better and worse, and now as its part of him, i am trying to learn to at least like it:wink:.
I have been his carer now for over 7 years and we do ok..no..better than ok... most of the time.
He is a very good man...just a sick one. He has been on Efexor(2xday) and Serapax (up to 4x day) for years..Occasionally he thinks he is so well he decides to stop the efexor..of course he is STILL not recognising that the drug IS the reason he is 'doin' ok" and so after a few stress filled weeks with higher than normal episodes of his different symptoms (usually all my fault haha) i swiftly put him back on it!
OK got the brief personal and medical bits out of the road. I need to ask for some hints if any of you lovely Melbournites can help me out.
We have recently moved to a new suburb (outer eastern...near the Dandenongs in Vic) and I/He/We need to find him a new psychiatrist reasonably close by. He has a good medical dr, but he lives miles away now and apart from that, we both need someone we can both go to in a hurry as...im sure you all know this...the decision to get immediate help during an episode can be fleeting, and if we have to go too far, he will either suddendly bluntly refuse to go, or he will turn on his best "look at me I dont even have PTSD" behaviour (and man, he is good at it too).
So you see my dilemma. Id appreciate any good names anywhere this side of...say..boronia, bayswater etc...
He certainly does have PTSD and he is on a full DVA Life Disabled Pension incl Gold Card (as you know the DVA doesnt hand these Pensions out lightly, nor without much research into what caused this horrible thing) so, yes, I am very serious. As his present Doc is now miles away, he doesnt seem to know of any ptsd (pref army veteran) specialists around our way who specialise in this disorder.
I know some of you may tell me to contact the DVA for a list, but I would rather hear from someone who knows someone good...I am also sure we have all experienced Drs who think/say stuff like "its all in the mind" (well damn right it is!:mad:!) and one even said to me.."what do YOU usually do to set off these angry moods of his?":wall: yeesh!
