New Here
Hi there,

I am currently in Calgary, AB and looking for people in the area who might be willing to share their story as a supporter of someone with PTSD or a sufferer...whether it be the route to the 'cure' or the ongoing 'battle' and how you cope on a daily basis. PTSD not only affects the hundreds of thousands of vets who return from war, but also the loved ones around them. I feel like the support and resources for the affected might not be up to par and was really hoping others would be willing to share their story as I go through my own.

Many thanks!

Hello, and welcome! I agree with you, resources for Vets, trauma survivors, and their loved ones, are limited. I hope this forum helps, in addition to the other resources that you find!

Households, businesses, communities, and countries are effected by it, insidiously and blatantly. Judith Herman's book on PTSD is a good place to begin. It gives a historical context and it describes the stages of recovery.

And since living with someone with PTSD, can create a level of trauma for the loved ones, Waking The Tiger, can be helpful, to both suffered and loved ones, to understand the cycle of fear and violence.

The daily grind of being a sufferer and a supporter, have some things in common. The need for support (counseling, maybe meds), the need for personal skills to deal with emotional upsets (i.e. low self-esteem, grief and anger) and the ability to create an independent calm emotional center, apart from your mate are important (Mindfulness is great for this).

Daily, and weekly, I have a routine, that includes all of the above. There can be really rough days when I don't know if ilife is worth it, and there are days when I believe life is worth living. The supports I mentioned help me, tremendously.

What are you going through right now? Do you want support for anything specific?

Hi Change,

Thanks for the advice and book recommendations, I'll pick them up today! As for my story...here's the thread I initially posted:
https://www.myptsd.com/threads/relationship-ended-confused.48578/

I'm attempting to give him the space he needs and in the meantime try to gather as much information as possible as well as look after myself. In all honesty I had no idea just how major the impact could be from this disorder! It's scary and sad and well I think more can be done because people aren't educated enough about it. This is a great forum, however I was hoping if there was someone in my area willing to sit down and chat that would be amazing :)
