Mental Diversions

Hey All

I'm not sure if this is actually the correct area to post this but I thought it might be helpful.

I know that many of us look for some kind of mental diversion from some of the stress caused by PTSD. Some of us read, or do something physical or game online or something that diverts our attention from some of the things that bother us.

I've found a site that I find both a nice diversion and something to improve ones cognitive abilities. The site is called lumosity.com and the link would be www.lumosity.com

It uses a game like atmosphere to challenge you mentally and I find it helps to both reduce my stress and improve my mental abilities. The only catch is that the first few sessions are free after which you have to subscribe to the site to continue. I think it's worth a look see, if that's something that interests you, and then you can make up your own mind about it. Enjoy.

thanks Jar.. as soon as I find my second pair of glasses I will check it out.. dude from the pool stole my first pair and my 5 yr old pair has gone missing now as well... I think Nala took them lol.. no serious for some reason she loves glasses... I caught her 3 days ago running around the house with them in her mouth and throwing them then running to grab them again... If I didn't love her so much I would make her wear them to see how the world looks to me without them... all fuzzy and such..

I've started glass engraving as a distraction, I think it's because you have to get to a relaxed mental and physical state, if not it all goes wrong. The other plus side is I've made a few quid with it now as well.
It's something I never thought I'd have the patience to do before, but it's turned into a beast quieter for me.

cool S!!!! I am getting back into calligraphy... not so much for the money when someone wants a custom Bday card for someone but the solitude and blocking everything else out to get that perfect letter... something I know you understand with what you do.. no one can interfere with that amount of concentration..

Too right tho, it's almost zen like for want of a better word. The extra cash is just a bonus, if you guys don't mind, I'll put some pictures up?
Calligraphy must be nails to do?

naw.... it is ok.. I think any hobby looks hard to someone not doing it.. but a moment of light for the person who enjoys it... hmm Imma start a hobby thread...

Awesome idea mate, think a lot of us here have found hobbies so perhaps somewhere to talk about them and show stuff would be great

Been reading a book called "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" it's pretty interesting really - it explains how when you use your creative side - the right side of the brain - the left side - the logical and communication centre slides into the background and becomes quiet...I think this is why we feel better creating something...

I have always enjoyed drawing and writing. For the last two too three years i haven't done much of either until last week. I've found that both during this stressful time in my life has given me some sanity. Maybe if i would have used these type of distractions instead of the harmful ones I can't but wonder if I wouldn't be where I am in life today. Which is not a very happy place. I am at least thankful that I have them and can implement them now.

This is a really good site JarHed. Thanks. It is now part of my morning ritual. I have a similar program on my mobile phone, but the buttons are too small for the speed games. (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it)

Thanks again.

Yeah Drittz those things are golden for people like us. I love to write, but sadly I don't do it every day. I should, but the old brain gets in the way a bit too often. You know what I mean.;)
