It's a very political time, world-wide. And there are intense violent events (bombings, shootings, coup, riot, it goes on...) happening every day.
This sub-forum has gotten very active. That's good; people need a place to talk. It's also gotten heated and at times, ugly; I include myself in that.
Some reminders:
OPINIONS ARE VALID: and take an extra second to clearly state 'in my opinion', 'I believe', 'I think' - anything to make clear that you are expressing a belief, not a fact.
FACTS ARE WELCOME: no-one ever fared worse (in times of political upheaval) from having more facts.
OP, STATE YOUR INTENT: if you want to declare a thread a 'support zone', a 'pro-X zone', a 'immigration debate' thread, 'gun legislation debate' thread - whatever - state your intent. Give clear guidelines in your first post. I'm not talking about censorship, but I am talking about focus. On the PTSD side of the forum, it's important for all threads to permit dissent; but in a hot political debate, a little more order will go a long way.
AVOID HATE SPEECH: Hate speech is loosely defined as language that threatens or insults groups on the basis of race, religion, orientation, gender, etc.
OPINION: "I think that all people named Alex are racist. I've met three, and that's enough for me"
HATE SPEECH: "everyone named Alex is a racist"
FACT: "Alex Anonymous is a noted racist - here's a link."
Hate speech is prohibited in MyPTSD, and individuals run the risk of being thread-banned at a minimum.
SPEAK FOR YOURSELF: If you think we should all light a candle for the dead, say 'I think we should light a candle for the dead'. Don't say 'We all must light a candle'. And when you are reading posts, remember - no one but you can speak for you; so even if someone appears to be telling you what to believe, you aren't beholden to their instruction.
I am not asking members to be 'nice', or only state popular opinion, or 'soft' ideology - just use respect, and let the guidelines (above) do what they are intended to do - support debate about difficult things in an intense time.
Thanks for reading
