Probiotics?

Has anyone experienced a change in themselves (or someone they know) after beginning to use Probiotics?

Someone sent me a link to an aricle this morning, which I haven't been able place in this post (errgh). It can be found by googling: Gut feelings: the future of psychiatry may be inside your stomach.

I am definitely happier when my tummy is happy. When there is toxic stuff needing to get out and I am ...ahem...having problems eliminating them, my thoughts seem toxic too. I do take probiotics and though they haven't significantly impacted PTSD symptoms, it seems they do enhance my sense of well being.

Yes!!! Get on them :) ...digestive issues is common for people struggling with PTSD, and since serotonin is created in the stomach- it leads to major problems if the digestive system isn't working properly.

Some probiotics are definitely better than others, so make sure you chat with the naturopath at the pharmacy. Ask for the capsules with the most strands of good bacteria. Also, I recommend overlooking the price of it- the good stuff can get a bit pricey, but it's completely worth it!

I struggle immensely with digestive problems. Have had numerous tests, been to specialists, etc etc and nothing seems to be helping the case.

Would love to hear from anyone that struggles with this also, it's becoming so invasive in every day life.
Sometimes I get so severely and painfully bloated I literally can't get off the couch.

Very over it!

Oh Naturebaby, that's severe! I know quite a bit, and am happy to help :)

Sounds to me like you may have some food allergies...
The first thing you need to do is get on probiotics. For the first month, you need to be taking at least two a day 10mins before you eat.

Second step is to eliminate dairy from your diet for a week and see if it makes a difference. You may have an intolerance to the casin protein found in dairy. Signs your body is not tolerating it is becoming mucus-y after eating dairy, bloating, cramps, diarrhoea, gas.

If it helps to stay of dairy, stick with it! Another food allergy to consider is gluten. It has very much the same signs as the dairy- minus the mucus. You may need to stay off gluten for a few weeks to notice a difference - it takes a while for your body to recover.

People who struggle with depression tend to eat easily accessible foods, which are often highly processed and unhealthy. The best thing you can do for yourself is when your feeling like you have energy, prepare healthy foods to keep in the freezer that take little or no time to get on the plate.

In my freezer, I have portion sized containers with:
-two different types of my fav soups
-chilli con carne (goes with corn chips)
-cottage pie
-rogan josh with rice
...I also make my own hommus and other dips, and then keep salad sticks in the fridge for dipping and a supply of rice crackers. I eat lots of fruit, and limit the amount of meat I eat (body takes a long time to digest meat) replacing it with kidney beans etc where I can.

If you're able to see a naturopath, they can obviously help much more than I can... I know funds can be limited when people have PTSD though. So I'm happy to share what I've learnt- hope this helps!

Have lots of tummy issues! I live on stomach meds but probiotics are awesome.

I would suggest you follow a bland IV diet or a BRAT diet and cut out carbonated drinks and caffeine. It takes more than 2 months to see a change and feel better. Cut back on your gluten as well. I eat oatmeal in the morning with fruit and it fills me up and makes my tummy feel ok. I have had times where I was sure I was dying I felt so bad but those times I either had ulcers or gastritis. I can keep it at bay if I eat right and stay away from the carbonation! Good luck!

I swear by the real probiotics of real kefir. I could talk anyone's ear off about it. I'm not talking about the kefir bought in a store, but the traditionally fermented stuff. As a casein intolerant person, I was able to do kefir. I stopped because the process was making too much and I got overwhelmed by it.

Google Dom's kefir or kefirlady or real kefir and you will find what I'm talking about.
Another option if you don't want dairy, is kombucha, which is similar, but it's fermented water (you put sugary things like fruit in the water, and the bacteria eats the sugars).
These have a tiny amount of alcohol in them, but it's really minimal.

And super healthy for your gut, better than any capsule. As far as I know, there are networks of people in Australia, Canada and the US who will share their grains to make kefir. Beware of fakes. Prefer fresh, not frozen.

The microbiome is connected to our immune systems, neurotransmitters, everything really. I think I'm chronically undernourished basically because of a bad gut biodiversity.

Yeah, I can talk anyone's ear off about gut bacteria and kefir.

Another kefir fan here, although more recently I've been making water kefir as opposed to milk kefir. It's a slightly sweet, carbonated beverage full of probiotics and fed with sugar (I use organic rapadura to be super healthy; the molasses in rapadura really helps the fermentation process too). You can buy water kefir grains (they are like squishy crystals) which are different to the milk kefir grains presentjoy mentioned above.

Most of the sugar is eaten up in the fermentation process so it's not bad for you like soda. I've been a bit slack the last few months, and I've noticed my digestion suffer for it. I really need to get back into it.

Ooh spooky - and thank you! I just posted about this in the Supporters' section - Husband is really struggling with his stomach at the moment, so I will most definitely be looking in to this!

They had me on probiotics for awhile and they did seem to help. Right now I'm on a different stomach med due to my stomach not processing things in a timely matter. Apparently I have a sluggish system and most things don't digest very well. Part of my chronic health issues due to my autonomic nervous system not functioning correctly.

I do notice when the PTSD or depression is worse so are the stomach issues.
