Prolonged Exposure Therapy

Breaker, this is a veteran only forum. Regardless of your rhetoric, it isn't difficult to state your unit / job, where you served and when. Call it a forum BS detector from trolls and want to be veterans. Nobody is asking for your life story, but other veterans are cautious and curious, thus it isn't rude or asking much at all for you to provide such details. As veterans, we know who is full of BS and who isn't / soon work it out based on what others say. True vets know things that want to be's simply could not know.

Maybe you are a veteran, maybe you aren't... so other veterans here deserve the right for you to provide "basics", not your life story or secret information. Unit, job, places served, are not secret information...

If you don't provide it / haven't provided it in person to another veteran here so that you can be ascertained as a veteran, then I will ban your account. Sorry, but your information about PE doesn't say anything about you being a veteran, as you could have had PE for any trauma in life, not specifically from military operations.

Time is ticking.

Reminds me of..................
'Cause I have done it before and I can do it some more
I got my eye on the score
I'm gonna cut to the core
It's too late it's too soon or is it?
Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, boom

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was right, you were wrong
Yeah, yeah, yeah, going, going you're gone

Incidentally, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to draw attention to our modest star Lee's little pointed stick:

that was just too pointy and sticky for our secretive visitor.................

I thought i was being PC

A mate of mine told me about his old staff-sergeant. Whenever this old gaffer was confronted by someone telling him their f*cking life story, after a while he'd pull out a 10p piece, and press it into their hand........
'There's 10p.............., now go and phone someone who gives a f*ck'.

Anyone else try this therapy?? I was doing it for 4 months every second week and seem to make things worse. The therapy is focusing on events that occurred during my last two tours. The Doctor told me I seem to remember traumatic events in great detail and can put myself right back to an event that happened years ago. I was became very distressed thinking of attending therapy for the 4 months I was doing this

Due to the complex and extended nature of my PTSD I discussed doing this and EMDR as well. It was decided that the results vs the risk was not worth trying. I think its up to the individual to figure out treatment and how to go about getting the proper help. I think ALL therapy gets worse prior to getting better as you have to drag out bad memories and then face them. Only then can you begin to start to heal from them. Currently I am in a limbo of therapy as I talk about my stressed out daily life and pretty much avoid talking about the ptsd directly. I know I still have a lot to face and deal with but being homeless, in the process of getting divorced and separated from my 2 kids and not having access to my personal possessions for almost 9 months seemed like more than enough to try to deal with currently. We all have our burdens to bear and I know there are other vets far worse off than me, I was just trying to get across that therapy is very personal and different for everyone. Do what you think will help you out the most.

I think that's the key.Great post Red.

If one type doesn't seem to work, don't give up on therapy, find another that will.

Hey Jar,

What a coincidence. I just went to my therapist yesterday and we are going to start the exact same thing.

This is how he basically explained it to me...........

He said that as we have been 'Conditioned', the only effects we feel now are Depression, Anxiety, Anger, and Stress.
I should clarify that, the only effects we display. Yes we feel joy and can laugh at a joke, but you won't find us in a smiling cheerful mood all day. Yes we can feel sad, but its as we have been conditioned 'Get Over It'. Love, well we want to show it, so its either meaningless 'Tomcatting', or the sex drive has gone.
So the main things we are left with are Anger, Stress, Anxiety (which are all ok in the military) which also causes depression (does that make sense)....

So basically everything in life now returns one of those feelings..

And because there are a multitude of combat experiences, he explained them as all revolving around the few major emotions, sort of like a weeping infected wound, the only way to fix it is to go to the source (the emotions).

What a load of waffle. It is 4 am here.

I will keep you posted about it too, but anything is worth a shot.

Thats no waffle there. That explains Combat PTSD to a tee. Nice one. I'd like to see that Doc.
