I am curious if anyone has had issues with reasonable accomodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act for PTSD. I know FMLA, but, know ADA has different regulations. It's funny because I was born with a physical disability and never ever considered myself disabled. I always did everything I could for myself and never let it stop me. I have been grieving over PTSD and accepting it is a disability. Two mind sets. Anyway, just saying I am disabled right now, is hard. I know with all the therapy and steps I am taking to overcome, I will not always be in this symptomatic situation. Anyway, does anyone have an experience with the accomodation rights and what could be considered reasonable? Thanks...

That's a difficult question to answer without more information. What is considered a reasonable accommodation varies depending on the type of work that you do and your position.

Hi PTSD Me,

Check out the Job Accomodation Network via Google (JAN for short). I use this resouce in my work and it is a reputable resource for exploring these kinds of questions. This is a site sponsored by the US Department of Labor and a free service.

From what I know - with ADA it has to be "resonable accomodations" that don't cause "undue hardship" for the employer. It's a VERY gray area and is definately a case by case situation.

For example - in some workplaces you might could have a flexible schedule - where you came in a little later (due to lack of sleep) - but in my job there is noone to "cover for me" so that would create an undue hardship for MY employer - but for somewhere else (especially a larger company) it might not require a hardship at all.
