I think ill's advice is on the money because PTSD is a health issue. A very real issue.
When my incident happened, it actually made the news, so there was no hiding it from anyone, but perhaps if there are a few people you are close to, you can share the whole story with them if you're so inclined.
What did happen is after it made the news, a few of our church members actually came to my home to see if I was okay, and one helped my husband give me a (LDS or "Mormon")priesthood blessing (which helped me remarkably). People might be more sympathetic then you'd expect.
