Hi I am a Psychology Student at Mid-America Christian University and I've reached the point in my Education where we are to conduct a research project. My research project will be on PTSD in Domestic Violence Victims.
At this time, with this study I am seeking to answer two questions. Those questions are as follows:
  1. What is the occurrence of PTSD in Domestic Violence Victims; and
  2. What are the percentages of men being affected by PTSD due to domestic violence compared to that of women?
I am seeking to answer these questions because I have friends and family members who suffer from PTSD and as it applies to victims of domestic violence it is not studied nearly enough.

Provided that I am granted permission to do so, I will be posting a short 10 question survey for those of you who will to participate in it. I will also have some questions for each of you to answer, for those who will that I will be uploading to the site (if I am permitted to do so) along with an informed consent form.

Rest assured that if you choose to be in my study no names will be in my project report at anytime.

Can you define domestic violence for the purposes of the study to be more criteria specific?

Sometimes people experience violence at the neighbor's house or at a relative's house, but not in their own home. Some kids are living out of several relatives' homes. People can be confused by what the term contains.

Also, does it matter where the trauma happened for your study? I mean, why domestic violence only?

Finally, it seems to happen that kids who are abused or neglected at home end up the target for more aggression out in the world. This means, they start to be victimized in multiple fronts. So I don't really get the study set up.

When I look at a the ACE Study, which has already covered some of your study's tracks, they just look at the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) in the general population. This was a large longitudinal study that proved that ACEs are extraordinarily common; in other words, a large percentage of the population is aware they suffered an adverse event during childhood.

What is troubling is how many people have experienced trauma during childhood and have no conscious memory of it. Traumatic amnesia, is the reason that even the ACE study cannot truly account for the actual prevalence of abuse toward children.

If you haven't checked out the Kaiser ACE Study, then I would do so, so that you can see what research is left to do after that huge undertaking.

Then, if you proceed, make sure to set up your research to capture all childhood abuse. Respondents will not be able to effectively tell you if it was "Domestic" or not, if you understand me. You will have to determine that yourself from their responses.

Thank you for hearing my thoughts on this important work. I am glad people take an interest and care about this important social problem. I hope your research goes well and that you are able to contribute to the work in changing the world for future children.

I think you may have the wrong population for your first study goal.

If your research study is to find out the percentage of domestic violence victims that have PTSD and that don't have PTSD, then you should find a forum of domestic violence victims that have people with and without PTSD. Or interview a general population, and select those that report domestic violence, and then find out what percent of those people have and do not have PTSD.

People without any PTSD from domestic violence that they experienced don't generally participate in a PTSD forum. You are choosing a population of people with PTSD (excerpt supporters) and then trying to see who here experienced domestic violence and did and didn't develop PTSD.

If you want to know how many people with PTSD have experienced domestic violence, this is a great population sample for that study.

This could be a great population to find out how many men vs women have PTSD from domestic violence. You are choosing group of people with PTSD, and then seeking to see how many male, how many female.

I look forward to reading more about your study as you progress in developing it.

Another important thing to consider when preparing your study is how, exactly, do you plan on collecting your information? If this website will be your only source, your results will have a very heavily skewed bias, as just about everyone who uses this site will be a sufferer of (or supporter of someone who suffers from) PTSD.

Question #1 - Percentage of individuals suffering domestic violence that also suffered PTSD, will require finding a sampling of individuals that suffered domestic violence and then determining how many of those also suffered PTSD. This will be a very difficult sampling to obtain and might require seeking numbers from the professionals providing counseling and diagnoses - while maintaining confidentiality requirements.

Question #2 - Percentage of men vs. women suffering from domestic violence, will be equally difficult to maintain, if not moreso simply due to the still prevalent stigma that men do not get abused. Those who have been have a very difficult time admitting it even to themselves and then seeking the necessary help to get out of their violent situations and heal.

And of course, you will face further difficulties in assuring you are collecting the information you really want, as people will interpret and misinterpret your questions based on their own backgrounds. Two examples of the need for extreme clarification are already stated here - do you intend this to include children? and how exactly are you defining "domestic"?

You won't get accurate results that reflect actual percentages in society by interviewing only people on this site. I think you need to go to a domestic violence site.

I am a Research Professor at MidAmerican Christian University. This post requesting participation in a research project by a student is NOT a research project sanctioned by MACU. We DO NOT sponsor any student research. All research projects must be approved by an Institutional Review Board before it is allowed to begin. This is NOT an approved project. Thank you for this information. I'm very glad someone looked into if this was a legit project that was really sponsored by your university or not.

I'm glad your university does not sponsor inappropriately designed projects like this. I do hope the student, if they even are a student, learns from the experience and does not repeat the serious ethical violations they have committed again.

Thankfully, the attempts to start a research project here have been so poorly executed that it has not gone anywhere - except to set off alarm bells to everyone here and lead to a lot of questions.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond here and let everyone know for certain that this is not a university sponsored project.

I have closed this due to the fact the author is citing this as a study versus an assignment or school project. A study has an official capacity and complies with a schools ethics board, an assignment / school project does not. You are claiming this is a study, which I just don't believe.
