Is it feasible for me to be planning to start a part-time work-from-home job just a few weeks after my baby is born? I understand that I will be sleeping very little and the baby will constantly need things, but is there also enough down time to work a bit? It's a position with very strange hours -- from 4 am until about 8 or 9, several days a week. I feel I can't really pass it up because it may be my ticket out of my horrendous full-time job, and I desperately need the extra income. But is it realistic to tell them I should only need two weeks off after the birth, and then I can work?

If you don't have a c-section? Absolutely.

In the USMC you returned to work as soon as you're discharged from the hospital. Yes, you're still bleeding like a stuck pig (drink water, think heaviest period ever for about a month), & have insanely crazy dinosaur farts  (those go away after about a week), but even including those 2 things, you'll generally be feeling waaaaaay better than you did the last month or three of pregnancy energy & mobility-wise. Sleep will be a problem, but sleep will be a problem for the next year.

If you have no choice to return to working so soon after childbirth, you have no choice. The working from home might actually help you focus if you happen to get postpartum depression. I didn't have the symptoms mentioned in the previous post....that I remember anyway, but hormonal changes and lack of sleep made concentration very difficult for about a month. If you have family or a friend who could stop by every once in awhile to give you a short break, you may be okay.

Sometimes that added responsibility could give to a healthy distraction while bringing in income. But if you get into it and feel overwhelmed, maybe it would be time to rethink it.
