Re-reading Childhood Faves? Suggestions?

My favorite book as a child was Danny, Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. I didn't have a great relationship with my father and that book is about a great relationship between a young boy and his dad. I read it once a year and it gives me a little bit more hope each time.

This is interesting to me. I had a pretty good relationship with my father when iwas growing up, but my brother struggled - and his favorite Roald Dahl book is Danny, Champion of the World.

For some reason I never got to it, even though I read most of Roald Dahl's children's books. - probably because I was such a tough little thing, I only wanted to read what I came up with, not what other people suggested. - (thank goodness I grew out of THAT! As evidenced by this thread :) )

But now, because of what you mention here, schmidt, I wonder... I'm thinking I should read it and maybe it will help me understand my brother a little bit better. Thanks for explaining why you liked this particular book best.

As for the spiritualism... she seems a little odd. But I'm willing to forgive it if the story takes over. :)

sometimes listening to the audio book while reading along helps with attention span issues, i've found.

I kept intending to respond to this - I think it's a great idea! I'm more likely to follow things that are written, but I think doing these together could be helpful when focus is a problem. I get antsy when listening to an audiobook, like I should be doing something with my hands. This might eliminate or at least lessen my concentration issues. Excellent. Thanks, corvidae!

It's sad, but one book I LOVED rereading as a kid was this book Kira Kira.

I came on here to say LHOTP and that's what you already wrote! I'm blown away and so happy and smiling right now.

That was my tradition as a child - I would wear wool nightgowns and walk down the hall with a fake candle and drink hot cocoa while reading. Perhaps immersing yourself in the tradition will help?

I'm hoping to re-read soon...I might make my tutoring student read it so I can too :P.

There are picture books, and not-picture books, in my head.

There is something called "middle grade" or so the new york times book review tells me! When my mother grew up, they were just BOOKS, not kids' or adults.
It's pretty much nonsense; kids vary so much - not just reading level, but interest. I had NO desire to read Johnny Tremain, for example :) (Sorry if I already bashed Johnny Tremain. It's one of those things, I had to read in school and I resented the hell out of it.)

Corvidae, your suggestion hit me at just the right time - I was checking out the audiobook of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" from my online library, I started listening but again, didn't know what to do with my hands, or what to look at... the screen of my laptop? So I remembered this suggestion; it occurred to me to get a copy of the ebook, too!
I have yet to try it. We shall see.

These comments complement each other nicely! I find new things in almost any book I re-read. At the same time, there are always more left unread..... A real Reader's Dilemma!

I would like to read The Penderwicks

This one has been on my list, along with "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children", and "The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place".
For some unknown reason those 3 books seem connected in my mind. Newer, along the same lines of "A Series of Unfortunate Events"? Has anyone read any of these? I'd love to hear what anyone has to say about these books!

a relatively new one, the "His Dark Materials" Trilogy by Philip Pullman

Oh, yes, Berlinda! Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy is great! That's the one I was trying to think o...

I just read that Philip Pullman is going to be putting out another trilogy, starting out in the world of the main young girl character - kind of a "Lyra: Origins" story set about ten years before the first "Dark Materials" book. The working title is "The Book of Dust (Volume 1)".
I'm looking forward to it - but unfortunately it won't be out till October - and I probably won't remember by then!
