Recognizing Unhealthy Patterns Of Behaviour

So just now I discovered something that could be a common pattern of behaviour with certain siblings .

I discovered that because I was raised in a very unloving, chaotic , abusive , neglectful home, I often only had two choices to make .

I could either live in fear of submission of I could challenge authority and get punished for it in any form.
Their often never was a third option.

As a result of this , in the last 5 years when it came to making choices , I would often go from one extreme to the other because I was raised to think in that way .

With the help of my counsellor , I discovered that I don't have to go towards either extremes .

Now of course , I want to give up video games for good because video games has caused more pain and And financial resources , and because I don't think it ever really was a genuine interest.

As for other things, I honestly am not sure.

I can say certainly that I will probably always need a laptop because of my career and access to the internet .

Please keep in mind that this is an ongoing thing that I have to continue to process with my counsellor .

I often have problems with extremes as well. I see some other people naturally doing things in a more balanced way and I'm amazed. Moderation is a frequent challenge for me.

Like you say, there can be things that are best given up altogether. The issue is knowing how far to extend that, what things would be good to keep in moderation. And how to moderate them. Decision-making can be hard.

I'm glad you have a counsellor who's helping. Good luck with this as it evolves.
