What support are you getting and from where?

I lived in Toronto 5 years ago and found it impossible to get affordable PTSD treatment. I also experienced with different counseling centers, psychology & psychiatrist initial assessments & finally a Sinai Hospital psychologist that they challenged my stating I suffered from PTSD. It was disturbing, one insisted that I probably had bipolar disorder and this was during 30 minute interview. As for groups I never found any and there are none listed here.

Are treatment centres encouraging the government to support those who are non-military?

Can't say I've found any here as of yet. For me it's for maintenance so I'm no longer anxious to find anything. Plus I'll see how this support site works.

What do you think is the biggest challenge for people suffering from PTSD?

I think it's in the nature of the causes of the illness to isolate the victims. I doubt very much that the public understand that PTSD survivors don't just go through a 'horrible time' they can't 'get over it.' Most are intentionally attacked, not generally, and many for years. Most people cannot believe that another human being(s) could sustain so much hatred for another for years. The mind and spirit recoils in the face of intentional evil and often you become suspect. There is a enormous fear of the effects of the drugs and the fallout in terms of employment. These are brutal facts as so much personal information is posted and exchanged online. Also, I find my greatest challenge in therapy and with those who don't have PTSD is that I don't want to be separated from my story. It may have stolen the best years of my life, but darn, I had some extraordinarily brave and profound moments.

What support are you getting and from where?
--I see a psychiatrist now every three months/med check and I quit my psychotherapy due to lack of understanding PTSD, seeking a therapist in a nearby town that seems to possibly specialize in trauma.

Are treatment centers encouraging the government to support those who are non-military?
--I can't say that I know if they're presently encouraging, but I can say, here where I live in Wisconsin there is a COMPLETE LACK of government help for those who are non-military. It feels like the rest of us non-military sufferers are left out in the cold.

What do you think is the biggest challenge for people suffering from PTSD?
--having a voice/being understood (its not a very well-discussed disorder...at all!), which goes hand in hand with handling the stigma. The roughest part is the beginning because there's such a lack of knowledge and awareness in public and private.

A few things I would like to know is:
  • What support are you getting and from where?
Right now, none. But the therapy I have received so far, EEG Neurofeedback, has worked wonders for me.

  • Are treatment centres encouraging the government to support those who are non-military?
The people that support me, yes. The government however has a poor view on civilians needing help.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge for people suffering from PTSD?
Public misunderstanding and Hollywood blowing things out of proportion makes that even worse.
